I have been traveling very extensively within US and between US and Canada. There is no such Laptop searched by TSA (American security search at the airport). Even I got an "SSSS" stamp on my boarding pass meaning that I have to go through the full search line, they won't turn on the laptop. An American lawyer in my office advised that US has a strong privacy law to protect all travellers. They cannot definitely search your personal Laptop "without a court order" or any firm reasons to believe that you can be a threat to the airport security. They may ask you to turn on if suspecting that the machine is not a normal PC, but you can refuse to do so. And you have a full right not to log on. There is no case of the sampling search. TSA has no tool to prove the identity of the copyright. In the porno case mentioned by comment #3, that guy must be tracked by FBI or Interpol before. TSA has no concern on pornographs.
If you don't feel good at all, just drain off your battery. They won't bother you to power up if your manner in the airport is not so weird. We, all the travelers with laptop, always sit down in every corner, browsing the web while waiting for boarding. Near the door to executive airport lounge, there will always be a free wifi signal. In the other area, you have to pay for the use.
So don't be so scare. Nobody care if you are an ordinary traveller, not a terrorist.
