To be able to claim a VAT refund:
- You must be from a country which is outside the EU (European Union) - You must leave the UK (and the EU) within 3 months of the date when you make your purchase - If you are a student then you must be about to finish your studies in the UK (this new restriction was introduced on 1 October 2004). After you have left you must be planning to remain outside of the UK for a period of at least 12 months - You must buy from a shop which takes part in the "Retail Export Scheme" (these shops will display a "Tax-free shopping" sign in their window) - Usually you must spend more than a minimum amount in the shop (for example: 50 or 100 GBP)

Value Added Tax (VAT) refunds
If you have recently (within 3 months of your departure date) bought items in the UK which you will take back to your home-country outside the European Economic Area (EEA), you might be able to claim back some of the Value Added Tax (VAT). To use the VAT Refund Scheme, you will normally have to buy the goods from a shop that operates the scheme. You can find more information about VAT refunds from Her Majesty’s Revenue and Customs.
