High competition? Large market? Less greed (due to laws)?
I don't know for sure, but I find it rather weird that laptops in Thailand are more expensive than in Canada. First, Canada has half the population of Thailand; yet, the prices are lower -- much lower when they're on sale. (What I hate about sales (discounts) in Thailand is that they're not real sales/super bargains like sales in the States/Canada - esp. Black Friday/Boxing day sales.) So in this regard, I don't think the # of the population is a big factor.
Second, I think the operation cost in Canada (& probably the States as well) is likely higher than Thailand due to higher wages and such. Remember, the minimum wage in Canada is like 10X that of Thailand or maybe more. Also, the population density of Canada is way lower than that of Thailand, so the product transportation cost would be much higher too. (Canada is the 2nd largest country in the world, I think.) Despite all those things, yet electronics are in general cheaper in Canada than in Thailand.
I may be thinking too much, but I think in general Thai business owners and (foreign) companies that operate in Thailand are more greedy--too greedy--than companies in North America. I think in more developed countries, the income is better distributed in general. (Like if you make more money, you pay more taxes). And the business owners tend to have better business ethics (morality?) - either naturally or due to laws and regulations (don't want to get into details here). Furthermore, the customers tend to be more informed as well in the developed countries (?) (see the existence of sites like fatwallet/redflagdeals et cetera), so the customers refuse to pay more. (You see how there are price matching/beating policies at almost every store.) All these could possibly make the prices lower in the USA.
