I think we really should bookmark this topic somewhere where everybody could see. This scam is everywhere and I suspect many people have fallen for it, losing thousands of pounds in the process.
For the past 3 months I have had 3-4 friends of mine almost falling for this very smart scam. Lucky we chatted first as all of them were very excited about the prospect of living in prestigious london locations for 100+ a week bills included. Please remember, when something sounds too good to be true, it usually is.
I can't help but think how many more people have already fallen for this fraud, especially overseas students who are just looking for cheap places to live. They would have no idea about how much to expect and no means of verifying the flat's existence.
My rule of thumb would be 'see the flat first, money talk later', but I guess that's not always an option for people who are coming from overseas. The safest way is if you have a friend here, ask him or her to help view the flat for you. Otherwise it might not be too bad to stay in a hotel for a couple of weeks and take your time to look for a place to stay.
