Usually I just ask krub like what kind of items would be needed. I think it's based on the principle that whatever you donate, doesn't have to be of high value but of high utilization.
At first I didn't ask but when I notice to see some of the donated items that never get utilized (because there are more than sufficient), I feel bad for the persons who donated. Also when the temple get surplus of something, let just say uncooked rice for example, we can take back and donate money more than the fair value. That way the rice doesn't have to be wasted and the money can be used for other purposes.
Laywomen can participate in activities, otherwise, no body like to do such as cleaning the toilets etc. and doing so I believe yield more merit.
