My son Aiden has just turned 4 yrs old last December, but he has been in the public school system for over a semester now (here in Canada, the cut-off age is 4 years).
The school Aiden goes to is not big. His class consists of about 20 children - senior and junior kinders altogether. I agree with แม่ลูกแฝด that, no matter how reputable the school is, a child's progress depends very much on the teacher as well as parents themselves. At this age, children learn mostly from examples, and the best (sometimes worst) examples come from their peers. You can only reinforce what they learn from their peers and school. Give them the reasons why they should/should not follow suit.
At the school as well as the daycare he goes to, most children speak a second language. Most parents are immigrants. They all look different and the majority are not black nor white. They are unique in their own way. If I put my child in a private school, chances are he would be the odd one out. I'd rather give him a sense that he's not different because everyone else is as unique as he is.
Right now he is copying my words every time I say something in Thai, just because he knows that all his peers speak some other languages than English. It gives him a sense of accomplishment whenever he speaks another language. It's not something he's ashamed of. Also, at school, they celebrate every religious/cultural occasion you can think of. I think that is the best the public school system can offer - diversity.
I don't have any recommendations as to which school system is better. I just want to share my thoughts.
Apologies for typing in English, but it's faster and easier for me.
