Mob pychology, an anthropological view Posted by Ian , Reader : 31 , 14:01:18
I am nor speaking here directly about Thailand, mobs and mob behaviour is a human universal, I have witnessed it in England, France, Greece and also Malaysia and Hong Kong.
Mobs are an extention of tribal warfare, them and us, they may form as the result of an intellectual/political objective, but they soon descend to this tribal level.
A mob usually have three components, an older group with specific objectives, a younger, hot headed group which supports the older group. and finally a group of anti-social opportunists who simply seek any excuse to create mayhem and attack the authorities.
As long as the leaders are strong and in control, the mob can behave in an intelligent manner, it is more a crowd than a mob, crowd behaviour is different from mob behaviour. If the leaders are removed the crowd becomes a mob, it breaks apart, members may even fight amongst themselves. The hot heads and the anti social take over. Rioting, arson, vandalism and theft is the result.
A mob which has gone bad like this is the most difficult to deal with, it has no true leaders, no core element, no one location, it can be anywhere and everywhere. It has no morals or ethics, no sense of reason.
If we look at our animal relatives, apes and baboons, we see the same behaviour when conflict flares up, we see the wise elders shouting verbal abuse at the enemy, we see the young adults rushing to do battle. If we look at the old Celtic fighting style, we see the same, a culture of heroic youngsters and wiser elders. Cúchulainn the famous Irish warrior fought most of his battles when he was a young teenager.
looking now specifically at Thailand, looking beyond the lies, the propaganda, the slurs, the hatreds, on both sides in this conflict. The government made a grave mistake killing or imprisoning the red leaders, they now have no one to talk to. Many anti-reds would say there is nothing to discuss, you don't discuss with criminals. Yes they are criminals now, but they did not start out that way, they started as a peaceful crowd exercising their right to peaceful protest. What turned them into criminals?
I think many senior figures need to do some serious soul searching, if not I suspect others will do it for them.
