"The Buddha lived in Magadha - so most likely the language he spoke was Magadhi. Pali is the language of the Theravada canon, and for a long time people believed tat Pali was also the language of the Buddha - however, now we know that Pali was never a spoken language (at least not at that time), but that Pali is a kind of artificial language (a mix between Eastern and Western Indian dialects), which was imagined to have been the language of the Buddha. Nowadays, of course, Pali IS in fact spoken, as a medium of communication between South and South East Asian Theravada monk scholars."
