I've been living in the US for 17 years and all I wanted to do now is to buy a small house in Thailand and move there when I retire ka.
USA may have a good image, but from the insider's point of view, there are many bad things here as well ka.
True... the US has free education, but FREE is not equal to BEST education. If you do not live in a very good neighborhood, your child will go to a public school which most likely to have a free but not so great teachers, over-crowded classroom, half of the kids who speaks English as a second language (nothing wrong with this, I too was once an ESL child, but your children will also not be able to speak proper english because of the environment).
Many parents now decided to put their kids in a private school because of the teacher to student ratio is much lower. Higher percentage of kids would get accepted to good university. It's a great alternative for parents who wants to give their kids a better opportunity in life, but it's not cheap at all.
A private preschool (2 yrs old - 6 yrs old) could easily costs you around $ 9,500 - $ 12,000 a year
Elementary - Middle School: $ 12,000 - $15,000 a year
And the most expensive private highschool in my area the tuition is $ 30,000 a year. (The house in this neighborhood starts at $ 400,000 to 5 millions and up)
