I live in San Francisco Bay Area, CA, USA. I would like to share a story about helping Thai and Lao doing healthcare oral translation (interpreter) at Stanford Hospital and some hospital in the area. I have seen so many cases but one is quite remarkable. 28 years old guy who has lived in the area for 5 years but he does not really knows how to speak English. He was deeply depress, also tried to go back home, Bangkok. He has mentally issue, so he did something against the law. Police locked him up in the mental unit in a hospital. Doctor treated him as mentally issue patient which means he is on drug to make him clam down most of the time. I was there to do oral translate for him. In a small room, there is a judge, healthcare social workers, and few people. I tried to do my best to help him but I could do that much. I couldn't interfere anyone in the private court. Sadly, nobody was there for him. I suggested social workers to make phone calls to someone he might know, so I could talk to them. Unfortunately, there was nobody pick up the phone. After the court process done, he walked away sadly. I have never heard from the hospital again. I assume that he might be locked up somewhere without any right to ask for help.
