Kathmandu, the capital city of Nepal is the storehouse of Nepali arts and architecture. Actually there are three cities in the valley; Kathmandu, Patan and Bhaktapur, the total area of which is about 250 sq. Km. These three cities were independent kingdoms before the seventeenth
century with their own kings. That was the time when the art and architecture of Nepal reached the peak point of development. What Nepal is proud of its architectural properties now are the works of that time. You can find so many temples and statues in the streets that an early visitor to Kathmandu valley reported that "every other building is a temple" in the city. For this reason this valley is also known as the city of temples and shrines. There are over 2,500 big temples and monuments in the small valley. Nowhere in the world can a person find so many temples, shrines, statues and works of art as in Kathmandu valley
