ok i'll pitch in my two cents and give you a guide for high-school students who want to get into top top universities (undergrad) in the uk or the us based on my experience (more successful for the former than the latter):
1. quit thai school and join an international school (no other alternative whatsoever)
2. join ones that offer IGCSE and A Levels (or IB - International Baccalaureate)
3. work your ass off ... during IGCSE (mor 3 - 4) it's imperative to choose Mathematics and English (language) and get AT LEAST a B for both (it's possible that you might be exempted from IELTS and TOEFL, i've got accepted by many uni's without neither)
4. during mor 5, study for SAT ... aim to get at least 1200+ or 700+ in the maths section (sadly, i didn't get that ... so i didnt get into any ivy's)
5. extracurricular activities -> do them! join student councils (easy cus most schools have crap ones) .. join competitions .. do music .. join sports team .. i feel that it's more important for the US side .. write articles ..one thing that's very useful -> Model UN!! sounds very nice and basically a free for all and u get to go to new york (or wherever UN is) but u got to pay the $$$ ... another useful thing is to get academic olympic medals :)
6. for your A level subjects, choose maths, for your IB subjects, choose higher level maths if possible although it's very tough but for numerate subjects (econ, sciences, accounting/finance top uni's require it and it'd be very useful)
7. what should you choose as your first degree? i recommend doing mathematics ... why? if you want to get a second degree, with a maths degree you get much more choice! for example, quantitative finance (sexy, rich), more advanced economics, the sciences, etc. if you are in a US curriculum, you can also choose social science minor to balance it out
8. early application is advised and generally you MUST apply before christmas of your senior year ... check out the US because they have much more annoying rules
9. some uni's might even arrange an interview with you in thailand .. don't screw it up (like i did) .. they'd surely ask you about the curriculum and the school itself ... DON'T say "i don't really know" (T_T)
10. for UK degrees, aim to get at least AAB in A levels and 38 points in IB. for a tip in IB, you can choose 6 subjects, do not be ambitious, choose at least 2 that you can pass well without studying, this will give you more time to study and get higher grades on the harder ones. the bonus points are invaluable and isn't that hard to get, although it's easier to get full points for extended essay in scientific subjects because the methodology is more well defined. the extended essay tests your research skills more than any other things. IMO, IB is easy compared to anything you'll face even in the first year of university.
11. read khun flying high's guide to UCAS to guide on completing the form
12. oxbridge has separate applications forms. DO NOT believe your college advisor if he says "no need". also, application deadline is very early and you can only apply to either oxford or cambridge.
13. you should be sorted if you have completed all the steps that i've mentioned above. every year, thai students do get into ivy's and top 5 in US and UK. even if you miss the chance for US or UK, there's always Australia ... which is easy to say the very least
12. good luck
caveats:
1. through my own experience, if you are good but you do not know how to work (read, time management) DO NOT apply to the UK ... it will kill you and crush any spirit you have .. apply to the US because they force you to work
2. if your teacher say "what you've studied at A Level/IB is comparable to first year university", give them the middle finger because it ain't. higher education is a whole new dimension of hell. however, first year university in the US is basically high-school, so if you are lazy and you want to have fun, go to the US.
3. finally, i also think it might be a tad easier to get into good uni's if you have your first degree in thailand and do really well in that (gpa 3.5+) because i tell you, it is much harder to get good grades in top universities esp. in the UK. in my uni, 35% is a pass .. sounds easy eh? but still almost a third of every year flunks in some subject. it's tough!!!
last words:
why am i typing this? 1. because i'm very bored 2. because i'm about to graduate soon, and i've basically f**ked up my university life. i've done this merely for nostalgia's sake. 3. because i want thais to rule the world 4. because i'm too lazy to read so i spend my time blabbering on here.
5. good luck, plan your life well, and it will PAY ($$$) more over, life doesn't END once you got into uni, it's just starting. do not make the same mistake as me and think you're sorted once you secured the place. the really hard work begins in college. i envy you guys, your whole life is ahead of you!!
