You're great! I like this song, too..for a long time..and I'm one of Simply Red fans, even though I can't say I totally understand his songs!! I like your take on that song ,but so far I got the song differently..perhaps because the music is sweet and soft...it sounds like Mick is saying he's been more into sex lately..but somehow this person comes along and he is so attracted by him/her. The hook (in a fade-out..almost like a whisper) at the end of the song sings "wanna let you know that I need you so...", so I kinda think that perhaps, if the playboy theory is right, he probably wants to quit living life that way ! But this song clearly shows he's confused and afraid. He knows his fault, but sounds to me like he admits he can't change ( not that he didn't want to). My observation might sound superficial, but considering the main themes of Simply Red songs, one can see how Mick has an interesting point of view about love..it's something like love is something you can't live with, yet can't live without. His songs can be quite contradictory sometimes, like "Love Has Said Goodbye Again".., supposed to be sad but the lyric is so hopeful and the beat is fun and cheerful. Or "Never Never Love" that sings.."so now we've got our independence..what are we gonna do then?" Or "Fairground" which sounds more like a playboy's anthem to me, "and I love the thought of coming home to you..even if I know we can't make it..yes I love the thought of giving hope to you..just a little ray of light shining through." The most complex song to me seems to be "Say You Love Me" It seems love is there, but you can't be sure who loves who! Also, Brit songs have this thing about lyrics (perhaps it's just the language problem on my part). Take Wet Wet Wet for example, the whole "Cold Cold Heart" song says as if he doesn't care for the girl and definitely not gonna take her back. But at the end of the song...again in the fade-out manner, he sings.."Gonna tell the world I love her..I'm gonna tell the world I love her." The whole thing is that he's trying to fight the temptation of having her back..and finally..at the very last seconds of the song..you know he's been saying things he doesn't mean! So, I'm suggesting that sometimes..with the Brit pops, the lyrics can be very tricky. I thank Khun Kon Thai Nai America Kon Nung for offering another interpretation. Your comments have always been very useful and thought-provoking to me. Look forward to hearing more from you. For now, I will go play my Simply Red collection , light my cigarette, and see if I can give you guys any more thoughts!
