the more i read the comments of คนไทยในอเมริกาคนหนึ่ง the more i grew annoyed and uncomfortable with it. it is not your fault, but really, the more i read the more i realised that the reason it upset me was because you sound like what i must have sounded in my younger and more spirited years.
true, one should have principles, one should have dreams, one should have hopes .. yet, reality is always there in its cruel, cold, and unforgiving self --- and no amount of self affirmation can protect yourself against that. sure, you can say you enjoy your life, you can even say that you are following your dream, but in the end, it is sad to say that such a thing is pure self-denial -- really.
maybe im a cynic, maybe im mean, maybe im an asshole, but really, the process of growing up is to learn to admit the cold truth of reality and to slowly forget your dream, or otherwise, to somehow reconcile your broken dreams with the reality around you. sure, if you have a modest dream, say, of being a street bum, you can in fact live you dreams, but really, such a dream would equate to that of an empty illusion and a mirage of self delusion.
no matter how hard you try, no matter how hard u study, your dreams will always be like chasing your shadows, always a step ahead of you. even if you are from the top universities, you still face perhaps a higher level of expectations, of dreams you want to fulfil, only to realise at once in your life the futility of it all, and after that erecting a wall of 'dreams' or 'spiritual achievement' or whatever new age bollocks around you to secure yourself from the unrelenting reality.
another of my gripe is with your "SPIRITUAL" goal. sorry to say this, but to me, anyone who says SPIRITUAL stuff are either entirely pretentious or delusional -- trust me, there's no such thing as a spiritual level of achievement, but still if that is ur belief, then let it be. yet, i warn u that if you stick to your new age gobbledoogick spiritual bullocks then your life will be wasted.'
anyway, my last practical advice for the gratoo owner is this:
1. if you want to advance your careers - DON'T do it unless 1.1 you are from not so good thai uni 1.1 you can get into the top uni's (top 10 uk, top 30 US)
2. if you are looking for experience and new perspective, DO IT -- the thai world is very small and stifling
3. if you love studying and love what you want to do - do it. surely, the standard abroad will be better than in thailand.
clearly, i'm not in the best of moods. but anyway, good luck to you all.
