My ongoing road to Ph.D.:
In my first year of my coursework, I had to cry everytime my Professors returned my graded papers because of the failed grades. I had to keep rewriting and rewriting for each paper.
During 1-3 yrs of my coursework, I still remember how many nights I had to stay awake (more than 4 nights a week), and how many cups of coffee I had to take. Forget weekend, movies, and party becuase I had to read, read, and read. TSA always wandered how come I never participated in any activities.
In summer times, I couldn't go back home because I have to redo my incompleted papers. My family did not understand why I did not go back to visit them. Last summer I couldn't go back to BKK because I had to do reserach job to save some money during dissertation.
One tip my advisor wrote to me is that "tell your friends and family that you will not have time for anyone nor anything during the semester"
Another tip is that "people prefer having a baby than writing a dissertation because no one will says that your baby is ugly, nonsense; but people do say that for your dissertation."
One word from doctoral student representative is that "You'll have no LIFE".
Now that I am preparing for my comprehensive exam (written & oral for 13 classes), I wake up in the middle of the night becuase of the nightmare about the exam, and have to go back to chilly study table, instead of the warm bed.
When I went present papers, people critic my framework. One guy from Eastern EU country asked me why don't you go get merried? what are you doing here? out of the conference room. Another Chinese guy said less chances for me to get teaching job in China U because they want only Ivy Leauge graduate.
External motivation to impress people that you get a Ph.D. is not enough commitment for your professors, the internal motivation must be demonstrated to them.
Positive points:
Once I found something new from my empirical study, I can sense that this is true reward. There were many nights that other people are doing some fun things late at night, but I was feeding my data, expecting that my hypotheses are right.
People in academic world are so supportive. I don't have to compete with other people just like when I worked in private sector, but I do have to compete with myself, which is much more positive.
If you think you like research job, and have much internal motivation, start pursuing scholarship today. Just like khun # 10 says: Universities are willing to support you, if they see your competency and commitment.
Good luck ka.
