I wouldn't comment on any other issues, but the email etiquette. I hope people might find it useful.
When I am busy, I normally prioritize the time before I respond to emails. If it is a spam, I simply delete it or report it (if it contains virus). If it is an email from a friend or some stranger that needs help, I would simply wait until I have time (normally within a week) to sit down and respond. If it is business-related (the meaning of business depends on your occupation) or some serious matters, I will try to respond within a day. If I know that the matter will take time to sort out, I will simply send out a quick note acknowledging the emails and say that I will take a look into it.
When you are on vacation, there is a feature in most email softwares to automatically send out a reply saying when you can expect a response. This will release the stress and misunderstanding of those who are waiting for the response.
====================== Now, my personal view on the whole mess. I take it a serious matter when I receive an email from someone who has catched serious mistakes in my publications. Thank god!! that has not happened. I will probably respond to it immediately and be more courteous.
I have a feeling that people who have something to do with the book first-hand know about the quality of the translation before it was even published and think that it is OK to go ahead with the publishing because it is not such a big deal in Thailand so far.
They might feel embarrased and under attack when they realized that someone has catched the mistakes and tried to bring it to public. So, they simply ignored the emails and wish it would go away, instead of dealing with the matter in a more professional way.
I agree that receiving 7 emails in seven days will annoy me a lot, *only if* the emails are unrelated and unimportant to me. For example, it is not nice when a student sends out 7 emails with the same content to their prospective advisor. I still think that these emails are important and the publishing side should deal with them more professionally. At least, one should take time to write back a short note acknowleding the receipt within the first few emails. The inaction indicates a different attitude. That's how I view the situation, if I'm not being too naive. The bottom line is that I think the repeating email thing is not an issue here and these emails are not spam. "Spam" is used to refer to unsolicited emails sending randomly to a large number of addresses.
