Here is what I understand:
Basically, in the first round, people from each party select their presidential candidate. There are 2 big parties: democrat and republican, so there are 2 presidential candidates.
I'm not sure how candidates from other parties like Nader can get into the presidential election.
Anyhow, then, in the second round, everyone selects a president.
The way they determine who wins the presidential election in America is strange. They use electoral system which means the one who gets the most votes is not guaranteed to win. Remember Al Gore? He got more votes than Bush, but he didn't win.
Each state is allocated electoral votes depends on the total number of its Senators and Representatives. One state may have 3 electoral votes while other may have 4 electoral votes, for example. The total of electoral votes is 538, so in order to win, a candidate needs to receive 270 votes.
