The best place to start looking is the local library which can provide details of local events, venues, colleges, training courses which are often free, and access to magazines such as Time Out (and also www.timeout.com) which lists events in London weekly and details those that are free. Many libraries have Internet access (free to members) which is another good source of information; but of course you can surf from the comfort of your own home too. London is one of the best places in the world for the arts not only because it is so big and there are lots of things going on, but because most museums and art galleries are free. Although concerts can be expensive, often starting from around £35 with opera being even more, there are pubs and other such place where bands play for free. Many of the great concert halls have cheaper seats and there are occassional promotions which give access to such places at greatly reduces rates. During the summer there are many free outdoor events too. I f you are a student here, you must take the opportunities that the college will give you to see how people live and enjoy themselves here. Student life should include some elements of learning about living, which must include entertainment and enjoyment - else you will become a very sad and boring person indeed! Tomorrow night (6th November) sees a free fireworks display, with music, at Blackheath (nearest station Cutty Sark DLR) at 8:00 pm - gates open at 6:30.
