to k. siangdin,
reference of important work is extremely important. you need name and year of publish.
if the work is not very important (i.e. just minor extension with little emphasis by ur lecturer) -- then only name will be fine. remember everything can be too excessive.
what name you should remember also depend on the context of ur work. like if you want to review the statistical work of 4 different authors to show the contradicting result revealed by different empirical investigations, then name is very important. like mr. A shows this and this. Mr. B shows this number. Mr C shows another number etc. etc. However, in certain context name might not be that worthwhile to remember. For example, if Mr Z provides a certain argument (which is only a minor extension), then you might be able to say like "some argues that ... etc. etc." rather than saying that "Mr Z argues that .. ", to reduce the numbers of name that you'll need to memorize.
anyway here is a tip to memorize name. just continuously write down the authors' name (and the year of publishment) of the work you want to memorize over and over and over. maybe repeat it for 20 times. this method helps me a lot to memorize information regarding name + date.
