On the other hand, assets held in the student's name can dramatically lower the amount of aid you may receive. Colleges assume that up to 35% of assets held in a student's name are fair game for college expenses.2  The theory is that parents have many other financial obligations besides paying for college, whereas a student's primary obligation is to complete his or her education. This leads to a logical conclusion: If you are going to save money for college, in most cases, save it in an account where it will be considered the asset of the parents, not the asset of the child. A 529 College Savings Plan, which offers professionally managed portfolios, can be ideal for this purpose. Not only are the assets considered the parent's property, but any earnings on contributions made to a 529 Plan account grow federal income tax deferred. Furthermore, withdrawals taken to pay for qualified higher education expenses such as tuition, fees, and room and board are free from federal income tax.3  Many states offer additional tax benefits to residents who invest in their own state's 529 Plan, as well. Assets held in a Coverdell education savings account are also considered the parents' assets for financial aid purposes. Unlike 529 Plans, the money saved in a Coverdell account can be used to pay for qualified expenses at private elementary and secondary schools, not just college. However, the annual contribution limit is just ,000 per beneficiary, and the Coverdell does not offer the professional investment management of a 529 Plan. Parents who put the bulk of their college savings into a custodial account, also referred to as a Uniform Gift to Minor Account (UGMA) or a Uniform Transfer to Minor Account (UTMA), need to consider the affect the account may have on a child's ability to get federal financial aid. These assets are considered the student's property and thus carry a higher weighting in financial aid formulas. To reduce the amount of assets in your children's names, consider tapping these savings to pay for pre-college expenses like SAT exam preparation courses and application fees. Custodial accounts come with another potential drawback: Once your child reaches the age of majority, he or she has legal rights to the money. If your child decides to skip college and backpack across Europe instead, you cannot stop him from dipping into his custodial account for airfare. If out-of-state tuition is more than in-state tuition, become a resident of the state.  In many states out of state tuition is double in-state tuition for state universities.  At Private Universities everyone generally pays the same tuition.  Foreign students generally cannot qualify. a. Register your car in that state b. Get driver’s license from the state c. Live in a house or apartment in the state (dormitory or student housing does not qualify) for one year 1. If you can, buy a 4+ bedroom house in the city of the University 2. Have your child live in one room and rent out the other 3 bedrooms 3. If you choose the right property, you either make money or your child has free room and board. (Although many universities say you must live in the dormitory the first year, there are always waivers if you live in town.  You may have to make a big deal out of it, but you generally can get out of mandatory living in the dorms. d. File your income taxes in the state. 2. Your child will qualify for more tuition assistance if you don’t claim them as dependants on the year before they go to college and during college.  They can claim that they are on their own, but they have to live in a separate residence such as dormitory, apartment or house (not your house).   3.  Your child can take the minimum number of credit hours to be full time student and then concentrate on getting straight A’s to qualify for merit scholarships.  Many graduate fellowships (full rides) are based on GPA therefore you can trade time for money.  Therefore your child might graduate in 5 years instead of 4 years and qualify for merit scholarships and then graduate fellowships later. 4.  Saving money in an account called a college savings account will always hurt your chances of obtaining financial aid.  Plus some of those accounts are only good for certain universities.  Some are limited to a single state or university depending on who runs the account. 5.  Retirement account like 401K, IRA is not conserderate for financial aid calculation because they can’t force you to reduce your retirement to pay for education. Therefore you can put money in RothIRA and you can later take out the principal, not the interest at no penalty, therefore hiding these assets from financial aid calculations. I personally believe it’s the best strategy due to its flexibility i.e. your child can attend any college he so chooses without string attached.  If a financial aid is offered, great it’s your gain.  If not, at least that young man’s college education is still intact. I know many elder co-workers support their off-springs through top private colleges from their own savings.  These are engineers making average pays like others of the same profession (engineers especially foreign ones do not make much when compared to marketers, doctors and lawyers). But they take college education saving seriously.  The advices from them are start saving as early as possible; periodically (bi-weekly, monthly) contribute a fixed amount towards education accounts; and invest in the market (look for the long term).  It really pays off; many now can be at ease again after their children had graduated and got good jobs.   To gain a special state scholarship, one must study in the field required by that state. This is not without string attached. Thus, one must be absolute that this is his calling.  Should he decide to change the field – as we witness in many college students, he is no longer qualified: he’s on his own.  To work in less desirable areas after graduation, is also an obligation the graduate must oblige. Should he dishonour the obligation, he has to pay back or else defaults the loan (his own choice).  I remember about a discussion on an on-going issue of medical students who took grants from government with a condition that they must practice in small towns where doctors are desperately needed.  These graduates did not deliver the promises; therefore, they must re-pay.  But they could not and probably will not. University staff benefit on low tuition fee is also helpful.  I remember the son of the professor I worked for paid very little tuition fee for courses he took.  I also got some reduction for working on campus.  But this is only for tuition fee not for other fees which can also be costly, e.g. room and board. Unless the student lives at his own home.   To make a career plan/move for the purpose of one’s children lower education fees, is quite a lot for parents to sacrifice unless otherwise the parents like being in academic field/environments.   Having said all that, I believe that’s why the article omitted these points.  I believe the purpose of this article is for a broader audience in general; and is for more flexibility rather than plans under which certain obligations/conditions must be met; or special circumstances one must be in. ความคิดเห็นที่ 18 I will not bank on the athletic scholarship because it can be very competitive and tough for your child.  In addition, chance of loosing scholarship due to injury is relatively high.  Once you are seriously injured to the point that you can no longer play for the college, your scholarship is terminated. Many gym-staff at work lost their athletic scholarships due to injury during practices or games.  One staff got a full scholarship to be in a football college team.  He was a star until he got a serious injury on one of his knees. After his knee surgery, he could not maintain his performance.  His scholarship was terminated.  He dropped out of college because he had no other means to support his education.  The other’s story isn’t much different except he got a serious head injury; he had a concussion.  Their futures were shattered especially the dream to become pros suddenly vanished.  To add insult to the injury, these men do not have other skills to get good (professional) jobs.  This is because athletes must excel in sports. In doing so, they spend most time, which should otherwise have been for studies, for practices. Ji, how have you been?  I have not seen you a quite a while.  I hope your family especially you son is doing well. I must admit I’m a bit uneasy about the make-believe residency in the state you do not reside in to gain benefit that in-state tuition fee.  I do not pay state income tax for that state, but I gain the benefits which should have been for students whose residencies are actually in that state.  I think it's a bit unfair for them. To invest in a property in a college town of that state in order to qualify for that in-state tuition fee, is a bit to much of investment for little gain.  In addition, one has to pay for other associated costs i.e. property tax, insurances, maintenances, etc.  It is known that college students tend to be carefree and less likely to take good care of rental property; thus add the costs to keep things intact, let alone headache and hassels.  Also, if one can afford to pay for additional property, why not just use this fund to pay for one’s child tuition fees (out-of-state) instead; much less headaches and concerns.   I believe participating in the state college saving plan e.g. 529 plan for that particular state, your child must attend a university in that state.  However, if you participate in private brokerage 529 plan your child can attend the desired university regardless of state. ความคิดเห็นที่ 19 If all means are exhausted, student loan is not bad.  Consider it as an investment: invest for your future and career.  Also, interests on student loans are normally lower than market rates; and are tax deductible.   My husband had a sizable student loan for his garduate degrees at a  university in Boston.  He paid  off within 10 yrs.  From our experience, it's not that bad.  He established the monthly payments, after an estimation, that he could manage; and that would not have a major impact to our livelyhood. Kai, I agree with you that junior colleges have come a long way; and they are good alternative or even hope for students who can not afford to go to senior colleges and/or who are not accepted by the state universities of their residency.  My friends’children including my second nephew are attending our county community college.   Community colleges nowadays have improved a great deal.  The one in our county, in my opinion, is excellent when considered in term of cost and return.  The new campus (third one) near to where we live is huge and well equipped.  Facilities are new and quite advanced.  Last week, we had a chance to visit a new campus of Northern Virginia community college (NOVA); we were very impressed.  I could not believe it is junior college.   Sometimes, I heard/saw discussions on these junior colleges on what they can offer to students, I thought they are quite appealing.  I understand they are also trying to bring in new talents.  My friend, who is about to finish her Doctorate degree in IT, was approached by the county college to teach there.  She is inclined to; she is getting tired of private sector.
