I have this bad experience. It took me years to clear off the mess. It was a devastating experience. The information shared below is from an identity theft seminar presented by Officer Kenneth Hudgens of US Air Force Fraud Investigator unit.
Here are some preventative measures one should take: - Promptly remove mail from your mailbox - Never give personal information over the telephone/internet unless you initiated the contact - Shred pre-approved credit card applications, credit cards receipts, bills and other financial information you no longer want - Empty you wallet/purse of extra credit card, IDs including SSN card - Opt to use an alternative number on Drivers License rather than SSN - Order your credit report from the three credit bureaus once a year to check for discrepancies - Never leave ATM/bank receipts at bank machines, bank windows, trash bin - Memorize you SSN and all your passwords instead of noting down - Sign all new credit cards upon receipt - Save all credit card receipts and match them against your monthly bills - Be conscious of normal receipt of financial statements - Contact sender if they are not received on time. - Notify credit card companies and financial institutions in advance of any change of address or phone number - Never loan your credit cards to anyone else - If you applied for a new credit card and it hasnt arrived in a timely manner, call the institution involved. - Report all lost or stolen credit cards immediately - Contact issuer if replacements are not received promptly - Beware of mail or telephone solicitation disguised as promotions offering instant prizes or awards designed solely to obtain your personal information or credit card numbers - Never use commonly used number e.g. SSN#, birth date, or last 4 digits of your phone number as your PIN# - Dont carry your SSN card with you - Do not have the DMV put your SSN# on your driver license. Some states use the SSN#, request to use Phantom SSN# instead - When you subscribe to an on-line service, you may be asked to give credit card information. Use caution. - Beware of con artists who may ask you to confirm your enrollment service on-line by disclosing passwords or the credit card number. Do not giver out personal information easily.
