In my opinion, good SOPs are unique and follow no pattern. Do not let forms (what to write on the first paragraph, what to include or exclude, when to discuss my qualifications, etc.) cloud your thoughts. Instead, establish your purpose(s) and follow it/them. Since most successful SOPs must convince the readers that the writer, among other potential candidates, is THE ONE who deserves to be accepted, one of your goals is to convince.
If for some reason you hesitate to begin, an outline could help (though I do not prefer it). Another great help is to freewritethat is, give yourself about ten minutes and write without a pause. Remember that you can return to your writing and polish it, as # 1 suggested. Finally, when done, it wont hurt to have someone proofread it.
Tip: The beginning is importantit gives your readers the first impression about your writingand, of course, yourself. Be creative, i.e., do not imitate others styles, but create for yourself one.
Good luck!
