What's the future for Asian monarchies?
Are they in decline or are they a source of strength?
Thailand marks the 60th anniversary of its king's accession to the throne. King Bhumibol - the world's longest-reigning monarch - enjoys immense devotion among Thais.
Not so popular is the King of Nepal. After massive street protests this April, King Gyanendra was forced to restore parliament and quit politics, deepening the trauma left by the massacre of the Royal family five years ago.
What remains of the Asian monarchies' legacy? Does the future belong to them? Do they have the authority of a unifier and protector of the nation? Send us your comments.

To understand the future of Asian monarchies, we must first understand Asian society.
The twelve years I spent living and working in Thailand taught me not to judge Thai society by western standards. I also witnessed first hand and came to understand the devotion Thais have for their King.
Rather than discuss the future of Asian Monarchs, perhaps we might consider exactly what it is HRH Bhumibol might teach western leaders about public service. Our own leaders have much to learn.

I lived in Bangkok for 4 years and I must say that the devotion the Thais show to their monarch is something that people in the UK could learn a lot from

Congratulations to King Bhumibol! The Thais were never conquered during the European domination of Asia, largely thanks to the intelligent leadership of their kings and queens.

The King of Thailand is the only ruler in SE Asia who has maintained the sovereignty of his nation. This is what makes Thailand so special, along with the fact that he has been on the throne longer than any king in recorded human history. The Thai people seem to have an undying love for the man for very good reason. He is also a proficient jazz musician, and has composed much of the music which marching bands play at various parades during national holidays. Go figure.
