CHIANG MAI : Veterinarians say they are unsure whether seven-year-old panda Lin Hui will produce a second cub.

The team monitoring Lin Hui said yesterday all they could do was wait as it had been little more than 24 hours since she gave birth to her first cub. But she was exhibiting signs of giving birth to a second.

They said pandas generally give birth to one or two cubs at a time. Lin Hui could deliver her second cub as much as 60 hours after the birth of the first.

Wei Ming, an expert from China's panda conservation and research centre in Yaan, yesterday confirmed the gender of the baby panda was female and it was healthy.

He said the first week after birth was very critical for the newborn as it begins adapting to a new environment, so it should be kept under close watch.

Thai chief researcher Prasertsak Boontrakulpoontawi said Lin Hui yesterday cradled her newborn baby all the time and never left it unattended even though she was exhausted from giving birth. Six members of the team take turns to monitor her and the cub around the clock.

After six years in Thailand, Lin Hui on Wednesday produced her long-awaited first cub with her mate Xuang Xuang under close observation of the zoo's veterinary staff three months after undergoing artificial insemination.

It is the first successful artificial insemination of a panda by a Thai veterinarian team.

Zoological Park Organisation director-general Sophon Damnui said Thai authorities would hold talks with China on the return of the newborn and try to extend its stay in Thailand for the sake of the public. Under a 10-year loan agreement, baby pandas born in Thailand are to be returned to China within two years of birth.

Mr Sophon said Thailand was required to pay China for all of the expenses incurred with the pandas in two instalments of US$150,000 (5 million baht). The first instalment will be paid within 30 days after the birth of the panda cub and the second by next year.

Mr Sophon said authorities will closely work with Chinese experts to ensure all care and treatment procedures are correctly followed.
