And the followings are their answers: (This one from my step-nephew, a native speaker of American Eglish and attorney of the U.S. goverment.) Yes, two different meaning, although the first one is kind of ambiguous. 1. Sounds like "She did not phone me." Could be read several ways though. 2." She did phone me and later forgot that she did it." (This one from another step-nephew, an American English native speaker and vet student.) I agree with Alex. (Alex is the person above.) the first sentence is stating that Liz forgot to call last Sat.   the second states that she did call, but forgot that she did. (And this one from my husband, a bilingual American and programmig consultant.) Absolutely two different meanings!! As for a source of reference this is always a MUST as a proof on  everything regardless of how definitive it/they may be. You cannot deny that. When it comes to language, people always use native speakers, whether it be friends, spouses, relatives, co-workers, teachers and so on, as some sort of reference to backup their claims. There is nothing wrong with that as English IS NOT our first language. I do not suppose you've used any of your English speaking comrades as a source of reference at anytime EVER in your entire life? Not even a single claim that your English teacher SAYS it must be this and that? Your above quote is what I always use when it comes to phrases or words that are not often heard by some people. It is pretty much the same as "90% SATISFIED" with a small "27 out of 30 are satisfied with this product" normally seen in TV commercials. As I have said before, sizable corpora and textbooks are a much better reference than some random natives--even if they are educated. I do use native speakers as a reference in some occasions to backup some facts, but never in such a controversial topic like this one (even natives are debating about this!) You said this phrase existed in a very different context. Very well, It's true enough. "forget phoning" sounds weird indeed; however, it is grammatically correct, that's why it's perfectly fine to me. And if anyone is going to use this phrase in the same sense as "can't recall phoning", I'm OK with him. The meaning still more or less along the same line and it can still not apply to this specific issue. Funny enough, our next door neighbour who is a British lady, a retired English language teacher who spent her entire working life teaching the language said to me that 'I forgot phoning you last week' did not mean 'I forgot that I phoned you last week' and was grammatically wrong. She further said that no competent English speaking people should ever use that phrase to imply that 'I did not recall/remember phoning you last week. Who am I to argue with her? By the way, apart from my wife, my daughter and this retired school teacher; I also talked to a few more English friends of mine, none of them ever recalled hearing anyone use 'forgot phoning'. They all said you meant 'forgot to phone' and I said I meant 'I forgot that I phoned'. What came next you can probably guess. Since you insist that it is grammatically correct, no matter how weird it may sound to you, no one can and will stop you from using that archaic 'forget phoning' structure. I am happy for you.
