The Effects of Sea Level Rise on Coastal Regions

Over the past few years, the term “global warming” has become a popular trend that people like to talk about. It is not rare to see it on television news, hear it in science classes and learn it from real-life cases. Due to the accumulation of greenhouse gases in the air, global warming has greatly impacted the living of all species on the earth. One major consequence is the sea level rise that impacts on coastal regions. Rising of sea levels caused when ice caps are melting, and the additional water that produced when ice melts, are the cause of sea level to rise (Gaffin, n.d.). Sea level rise has greatly impacts to many lives on coastal regions. It affected to the nature in negative ways. Coral reef deterioration, coastal erosion, coastal wetlands, flooding, and loss of land are negative results from sea level rise.

The first main effect of sea level rise is coral reef deterioration. Coral reefs are invertebrate animals that live under the sea. Rising sea levels damaged corals badly. Corals will
be deeper as the sea levels rise. They will receive less sunlight that makes them grow more slowly because without the sunlight, they cannot produce food for themselves or their hosts. If
corals cannot make food for themselves and their hosts, they will die. The sea level is very important for marine lives especially coral reef which is an extraordinary lives under the ocean.

The second main effect of sea level rise is coastal erosion. Coastal areas are those areas between land and water. During the previous years, sea level ascend “5 to 6 inches along the Mid-Atlantic and Gulf Coasts”. Over 600 populations live in the coastal areas, which is less than 10 meters above sea level, and over five million people in “two-thirds of the world’s cities” are located in these hazardous areas (“Coastal Zones”, n.d.). Global warming caused sea level to rise, and subsequent erosion affected many people who live in the fragile residences. Erosion can lead to land loss as well. Coastal regions were drowned by rising of sea levels. As a result, people are going to need to settle down in new location. That means they have to find their new homes and new jobs. Nowadays, there are so many people around the world were
affected from coastal erosion caused by sea level rise.

The third main effect of sea level rise is coastal wetlands. According to the statistics, One foot of sea level rise could eliminate 17–43% of today’s wetlands. That means the rise
of sea level will make new wetlands, reducing the total area of inlands. However, in some developed countries, the establishment of structures such as dikes can help from the forming of new wetland  (“Impacts Of Sea Level”, n.d.).

Although sea level rise has so many negative impacts on the lives on coastal regions, there are several things we can do to prevent global warming and the chance of rising of sea level today. There is still time to make a difference. For example, by adhering to the environmental policy “Reduce Reuse Recycle”, we all can help reduce greenhouse gases. As a former Vice President Albert Gore said “global warming will be the greatest environmental challenge in the 21st century”, it is everyone’s duty to help the world go green. It cannot only change the life of oneself, but save the life of all species on earth.
