ทฤษฎีหนึ่งบอกว่า that กับ which ใช้แทนกันได้
อีกทฤษฎีบอกว่า that ใช้นำหน้าประโยคที่มีสาระสำคัญต่อประโยคหลัก ในขณะที่ which นำหน้าประโยคที่ไม่มีสาระสำคัญ ยกตัวอย่าง
The shirt that you lent me is in my bag.
The house that I wanted to buy has been sold.
The food store that I go to all the time is closed today.
The shirt, which is red, is in my bag.
The house, which I didn't want to buy, has been sold.
The store, which is near my house, is not open today.
สังเกตว่าประโยคที่มี which นำหน้าจะมี comma อยู่ทั้งข้างหน้าและข้างหลัง
