English in everyday life + please recommend some English novels

Have you experienced something like this? I would like to share :)
I've just been to a market to buy some food. I saw that there were some stalls selling durian. They have been selling it for a week. Today I felt like eating durian. It's delicious fruit to me. How about you? Do you like durian?
I chose a stall on the back of a pick-up truck. I ordered a middle one. The male seller weighed the fruit. He miscalculated the cost. So I corrected it. He also miscalculated to other two customers. His wife corrected the second one. And the third customer correct the cost of their item. I observed that he never once calculated the cost lower than the right one. If there are customer being careless, the seller must take advantage of them for sure. I won't compromise to something like this. So I've been checking every time I was buying goods.
That's it. That's what I'd like to talk about. So simple to bring it as a subject to practise my English :) While I was walking home I was thinking about it in English. This is because I observe that I'm not yet mastering the simple sentences in everyday usage. I can read Bangkokpost, and mostly understand the text. With longman dictionary I can almost fully understand every single sentences in some subject. But to use them is another story. Even simple English in every day life I still have to consult with longman dictionary and sometimes with www.freedictionary.com and google. So I going to write something so simple first. Though no one to talk to, many ones to write to in here.
I won't ask about how to practise.
I'm practising it right away. And this is my English in everyday life. If there're any incorrect sentences, please revise them. Thank you very much.
PS I'm reading "Harry Potter and The Goblet of Fire." It's enjoyable and the English is interesting. I'm trying to finish it within this month even if it's very long. Could you recommend me some fine novels. I'd like to read some modern ones. Something like DH Lawrence's and Lewiss Carroll's are not in my interest. They make me sleepy. Sorry if I'm so pedantic. Am I a nitpicker? I also prefer humorous ones. Thank you very much. (I've read that K.Kurika've been practising English by reading novels she like. That's such an inspiration. ขอบคุณมากๆครับ)
Having been reading English for a month, I observe that it's not too hard for me, on some subjects like political or sport news or even short stories, to translate English to Thai. To make it interesting is another story. But to translate Thai to English is 10 time harder. Very profound. Like when I was reading Harry Potter, the English is simple but not easy to write something like that, let alone make the compelling plots.
