When I decided to move to Bangkok, my perception of Bangkok was a lot different from what it was today. To me, Bangkok was a thriving metropolis, the jewel of South East Asia. The city was vibrant with life and culture, complete with abundant shopping, cuisine, and sinful nightlife. Never would I imagine that Bangkok would look like a war zone. It all started to change when the military unsuccessfully tried to disperse the red shirts on April 10th, which left more than 20 people killed and more than 800 injured. This was the beginning of a tsunami of violence and terrorism that would publicly destroy Thailands image in the international arena, coupled with biased and uninformed reporting from international news networks. The world watched as bullets were exchanged on the streets of Thailand, an exchange of high powered weapons with M79 grenades, slingshots, petrol bombs, and homemade rockets. The world watched in shock and terror as Bangkok was engulfed in flames and smoke, torched by the red shirts who demand democracy through acts of terrorism. But now, the world watches in awe and inspiration as Bangkokians unite to clean up the city and return to normalcy. I felt so moved today when I saw people from all walks of life and ages come together. Equipped with brooms and rubber gloves, sweeping and scrubbing away reminders of the red shirts and violence that besieged the area. Seeing this renewed my love and faith in this city, and in this country. Despite the losses, the Thai people are not sitting around crying, they are too busy cleaning up and picking up the pieces of broken glass to rebuild their lives. The unity and spirit of the Thai people are strong, and I believe in no time Bangkok will be rebuilt, bigger and better. Im proud to call this my country although Im not Thai, I was not born here
but I live here, I work here, and I pay taxes here. I choose to call this my home and I love it just as much. Bangkok will live up to its name, the City of Life will rebuild itself again. From the ashes of civil unrest will bring the rising of the phoenix.
