Anyway, I think it's possible that SOME employees will be able to improve their English withing a year and half, given that their jobs are at stake. Note that I use the word "improve," not "be proficient," because I don't think the company is going to fire its employees if they don't communicate in "flawless" English in the given time frame. ความคิดเห็นที่ 4 I have written before in this forum that you can learn English and be proficient if you are in the environment and/or having motivation. This company is now doing both, forcing people to use English at the morning meetings and using English for internal and external communication (email etc). At the same time, it provides incentive/disincentive in promoting those who are proficient and firing those exeuctives who are not. ความคิดเห็นที่ 6 What I’m wondering is whether the employees will have to use English at all times or just be able to use it for certain tasks now and then as the need arises. To me it seems like a tall order for those employees who are starting from a basic level to get to a point where they can converse exclusively in English throughout the entire workday. She graduated over 20 years ago and it was during her years that the college required students to speak English in class as well as within the school's premise. Initially, it was hard for most students but after only a few months, it was quite normal and they could do it without any hiccup. What I mean by proficient is they can do the job required by the company without any hiccup, not an expert in English who can score something like 80-90 percentile in a standardised score like Toefl. I believe in the Japanese work ethic. If the leader provides such incentive/disincentive, these workers could rise to the challenge. They all have college degrees and screened before being accepted to work there. Their English should not be bad from the very beginning.
