What you have concluded is what I think "correct". But in this case,
I forgot polishing my father's shoes.
ตอนนั้นลืมเรื่องการขัดรองเท้าให้พ่อไปเลย
-คือแบบ ทำ/ไม่ทำไม่รู้แต่ แต่ตอนนั้นทำของหกใส่ แล้วเช็ดให้พ่อ
พอผ่านมาปีนึง มีคนเล่าถึงก็ลืมเรื่องนี้ จำไม่ได้
หรือว่าแบบ พ่อสั่งแล้วลืมขัดให้ แล้วพอผ่านมาปีก็ลืมเหตุการณ์ที่เราลืม
ขัดรองเท้าให้พ่อ แบบนี้ก็ได้เหมือนกัน
==> แต่ประเด็นคือลืมเหตุการณ์ที่เรามีอะไรบางอย่างเกี่ยวกับการขัดรองเท้าให้พ่อ
In this particular example. It could mean you forgot this event in the past OR you forgot to do this action in the past, depending on context because some native speakers do use both expressions to mean the same thing (forgot to do the action). So in this particular example, a native speaker may say "I forgot to polish my father's shoes" but some (maybe a small minority) may say "I forgot polishing my father's shoes".
So to ascertain the meaning, grammtical correctness might not be enough, context is the KING.
