Topic : what, if anything, governments should do to address wealth inequalities in society.

A good way to appreciate the inequalities that exist in our Thai society is to take a look at our capital, Bangkok.  Well over 50% of all the companies in our country are situated in Bangkok.  Well over half or our most prestigious schools and universities are situated there, too.  And, in terms of transportation, there is the same situation: whether by road, rail or air it is almost impossible to go anywhere in our country without first going through Bangkok.  Nearly all the earnings of hard working Thais in the East and West, North and South are sucked into Bangkok and spent there, leaving the rest of the nation impoverished.

Why should this be?  While Thailand is claiming a place among the democratic nations of the world it has instituted ever more autocratic rule by those in control of the capital.  For decades there have been pledges to institute decentralization, to give our other cities and towns and outlying provinces more control of their own affairs.  Why are these pledges never fulfilled?  I am ashamed to say that it is because the people who have gained control of Thailand’s wealth don’t wish to share it.

I stand before you here today as a young Thai student living in Lampang.  I witness daily the gaps in our society between those who have and those who don’t.  The gaps in resources to spend for civic development, for education for health and human services is most sadly reflected in a lack of development of a spirit of civic participation, which is the critical component of any democracy.  We in the provinces are left dependent on handouts, bestowed by our supposedly benign superiors in the capital.  I would like to remind you of a quote by Abraham Lincoln which truly defines the concept of democracy: “government of the people, by the people and for the people.”  We, the people, need to have government in our own hands.  The power of our nation should no longer be concentrated in the hands of a few living in the capital.  Power must be decentralized so that all Thai citizens can truly participate in ruling themselves.

Yes, there is much that government can do to address the wealth inequalities in society.  But, in a society such as ours, where the wealth has become concentrated in the hands of a few people congregated in Bangkok, the most important initiative is to break up this logjam of wealth and power.  Let our riches flow naturally out to where they are earned and where they are needed.  To Roi Et and Si Sa Kit, to Nan and Mai Hong Sorn, to Pattani and Pattallung.  Let those who produce our rice and our rubber, who harvest the fish from the seas and labour in our factories, let them, the people decide for themselves what is in their interests.

There are many gaps between Thailand and the richer, more developed countries of the world:  in science and technology, in education and human welfare.  But we are a great and compassionate people.  I say to everyone in this room here today, give the people a chance.  Give them back the resources their labour has earned.  Let them invest in the development of their home towns and home provinces.  In this way all Thai people will truly benefit.
