Topic :  Scientists agree that if we fail to take action to stop climate change, there is a danger that much of the Bangkok area will uninhabitable by the end of this century. What, if anything, should be done to prevent this happening?

Ladies and Gentlemen, My name’s XX, from XX, today I would like to talk about what, if anything, should be done to prevent Bangkok area will be uninhabitable by the end of this century.

More and more people are trying to stop the world change. I supposed the reason is due to the global warming, and that it shows us many problems effected all around the world, especially Bangkok sinking last year.  Main reason is that humans are causing warming and that we have got problems. There are many factors that could cause Bangkok to become a sinking city. One of them is the city's geography, with a slope on the eastern side facing towards the Chao Phraya River.  Other factors include an overflow of the Chao Phraya River due to excessive run-off from the North, rising sea levels, heavier annual rainfall, land subsidence and ineffective drainage systems in the city. Many cities in the world will be sinking, the oxygen we breathe was not here in the beginning again.  This will lead all of us to different of success whether it will safe Bangkok or it will collapse Bangkok in this century.

As we can still remember last year, the global warming trend is responsible for an increased severity of droughts, floods, and storms across the globe, and slowly rising ocean levels all around the world, especially Bangkok sinking last year. Even in Greater Bangkok, where seawater already runs in the streets, the flooding is suffered. Bangkok is a tropical metropolis where the traditional East meets the modernity of the West. But scientists show it to flooding, especially during the rainy season. The city is already sinking due to its soft underground, heavy urbanization, and excessive pumping of groundwater.  Much of Bangkok could be underwater before the end of the century.  Bangkok is not alone in facing these threats. Many of Asia's fastest-growing cities are affected along the coast and are already weak to storm surges and regular flooding even without the threat of climate change.  Yes we affect it slightly, but not enough to warrant the scare mongering and careful profiteering we see. Everything changes, including the climate. At this point, I have two suggestions how the government should do all of these.

First of all, The United Nations and World Bank might as well make an appointment in their books, for Thailand in 25 years, when they ask for help from the nations of the world to save their city. We must build for a massive dike spanning the Gulf of Thailand and the midst of expanding their canal systems and begin building floodgates and dykes to manage storms.  To save Bangkok, construction must begin almost immediately. In order for us to adapt to climate change in the long term, we have to better manage our existing weakness and better deal with the existing climate-related danger that we face. For example, China is preparing for the worst. China government is in the midst of expanding their canal systems. They have begun building floodgates and dykes to manage storms.

Secondly, the solution is to start to move Bangkok inland, this would be far cheaper than any flood defensive system and far more permanent. However, a lot of very important people would lose a lot of money in the process as Bangkok land values crashed. If these VIPs had any sense they would already be buying up land and building inland, the middle classes seem to be already doing this, housing complexes are appearing up like mushrooms around us.

If Thai government has nothing to deal with the effect. It is a natural process that we can’t stop it. Bangkok is indeed sinking due to global warming.

In short, If we can’t stop this, it will ruin the country's economy and tourism industry. I also believe that the Thai government's handling of large city projects over the past few years have made the flooding problems worse. They have spent people's tax money on multi-billion baht projects that are built in low-lying, flood-prone areas. There is the new parliament building being built on the banks of the Chao Phraya River, and Suvarnabhumi Airport was built on an area that used to prevent flooding in Bangkok. However, if this issue is worked on and resolved by governments and large corporations, we'd probably prevent Bangkok before sinking by this century.

Thank you
