Prince William, 28, the eldest son of heir-to-the-throne Prince Charles and the late Princess Diana, became engaged to 28-year-old Kate Middleton while the couple was on holiday in Kenya in October. Kate is the daughter of self-made entrepreneurs.
Prince Charles's office said in a statement that the Prince of Wales was delighted to announce the engagement of Prince William to Catherine Middleton. The wedding will take place in London in the spring or summer of 2011. The statement also said that Prince William had informed Queen Elizabeth II and had also sought permission from Kate's father.
The Queen and Prince William's grandfather, Prince Philip, said that they were delighted, while a cabinet meeting held by Prime Minister David Cameron was interrupted by a call from Buckingham Palace with the announcement. The prime minister was delighted to hear the news and has passed on his best wishes to the happy couple, according to Cameron's spokesman.
Prince William, who is currently serving as a helicopter search-and-rescue pilot in the Royal Air Force, met Kate when they shared a house while at university in Scotland in 2001.
They split up in 2007 because, according to newspaper reports, Kate was getting fed up with waiting for Prince William to propose. However the couple soon got back together.
Prince William had previously said he did not want to get married until he was 28, the age he reached last June. Following the wedding, the couple will live in Northern Wales so that the prince can continue his service with the RAF.
The engagement has been long predicted and rumours have abounded for months that an announcement was imminent.
While pursuing his military career, Prince William still takes time out for royal engagements. He flew into Afghanistan on November 14 for a surprise visit, attending a ceremony at Camp Bastion in Helmand province, the home of the estimated 9,500 British troops deployed in the country.
