What do you think about Thai Teacher let student pass level with lower potential than standard? That's what we do in Thailand caz some research show that repeat level will affect student in many way. But some think that if we let them pass without an ability to read write and calculate (For level 1) will affect wrose for them to study higher level.
Old Man says It is a problem in the US, also. There are problems when you make a kid repeat a grade level because it labels them as 'dumb' and hurts their self-confidence tremendously. But passing them on also just sets them up for similar failure in the next grade(s)
Young boy says so what's the solution for US
Old Man says The chances of catching up on your own after falling behind your peers is not good. There is no set solution.
Young boy says So what do they do in US
Old Man says Usually, a teacher can make that decision, themself unless the child is way, way below standards.
Young boy says What's normal decision the teacher will make I mean for the whole US
Old Man says I think they are moving more toward testing in much smaller increments, so that if a child is falling behind, you see it sooner and can get them the help they need. And the child has a portfolio of their wrok frm the entire year to show they have made the proper progress to advance. But the US is not like Thailand. In the US, edcuation is NOT the job of the national government. The constitution specifically makes it the job of the individual states. So each state sets its own standards.
Young boy says For thailand our Education standard is lower the US. If most teacher don't realize that student is lower before the end of year. And that is high percentage. Should we set the repeat system?
Old Man says Well, that is a problem, if the teacher does not realize until it is too late. SO (in my opinion) the system needs to be changed so that it is more clear, much earlier, that a student is falling behnd. I don't think yuo can say... I tested at the end of the year and this kid did not learn enough, so we hold him back. Not fair at all the to the kid. But you also can ot just shrug your shoulders and pass them on.
Young boy says so the system should change to test before the end of the year...right?
Old Man says That sets them up for future failure and does NOT prepare them for the real world. I think so. Establish a set of objectives and evaluate a set of them - maybe monthly. Maybe smaller sets and evaluate them once every two weeks, to measure their progress. Not all objectives for the year, just a small set to focus on each time period.
Young boy says If you're the one who can set the system for this problem in Thailand...(Which you should understand that our teachers is not as quality as US) how will you set it up?
Old Man says Bring a set of master teachers from each school to a central location and teach them this method to take back to their schools and mentor other teachers in... The edcuation department establishes a set of common objectives for each subject for each grade level. The teachers then divide them into small subsets. Master teachers does not mean old teachers.
Young boy says I don't want to interupt but if even the master teacher is not quality enough.... That's real in some school
Old Man says If I am doing this, I do it right, and get my most effective, most dedicated teachers to lead the way. Then you back up a step and find the teachers in the school who are the most effectice and most committed and you give them additional training with TRUE master teachers from other schools... Coach them up.
Young boy says if the teacher in the school can do as the purpose of your system, how'll they test student to pass from sub test or main test.
Old Man says They would probably want to team with other teachers of the same subject/grade level to develop some standardized method of evaluation. Does not have to be a multiple choice test. But a standard means of evaluting whether the student has mastered the concept. Math is easy. Science a bit more challenging. Writing more so, but it can be done. (I mean evaluating whether students have mastered the concept is easy in math, not that math is easy!)
Young boy says We are very much far behind from that, some of our teachers don't do the rutein job like lesson plan. I am not even sure that they create the test on their own or copy from the book. Some don't even care how the school will be , what student will get because we have a government system that not firer anyone with that kind of reason. In this situation some think that we should use the repeat system in the basic level to make sure that at lease they can read and write and calculate. What do you think?
Old Man says That is a problem in the US, also. Because of the teacher's unions in America, it is hard to fire incompetent teachers. There is a big push to tie teacher pay to student performance, but the unions are very powerful in politics and they are fighting this very hard.
Young boy says I'm not sure whether it'll be good but right now it's automatic passing level. And many people facing problem because of that system. How do they fight? Evaluate school and teacher?
Old Man says How do the unions fight? By spending money and supporting candidates for Congress who will not vote for pay for performance. Money talks in the US, just like here.
Young boy says so it's not just Thai problem it's international problem haha
Old Man says Oh yes. So when you fix it, maybe you will win the Nobel Prize Young boy says for the main question, i know it's hard to answer, should we use the level repeating system in Thailand when it has both pre and con?
Old Man says I think right now, you probably have to, but you have to give teachers/administrators the ability to make exceptions and to consider if, for this child, the risks of holding him back outweight the benefits. I think you can not have a black and white, he passed or he failed 70% and over goes to the next grade/ 69% and under is held back kind of formula But that is just my opinion (Which only you care about! 555)
Young boy says when will normal US kids be able to read write and calculate? Can they pass level 1 with out that skill? (If they are nomal kid not special)
Old Man says Supposedly, yes. But someitmes kids just get passed along because they do not have any kind of exit test and some kids in some schools graduate and really can not read.
Young boy says How can that happened? how much student graduate like that?
Old Man says Because a kid does not do well enough to pass, but the teacher passes them along to the next grade, anyway, and then the next teacher does the same thing and.... It is not common, but it happens.
Young boy says can I post this conversation in public without your and my name? We have talk about should we let student pass if they can't read write and calculate... I'm really care about this caz I don't want them to judge that this is a problem, well it is but it is both problem, let them pass or repeat them it will cause some bad. It's unavoidable.
Old Man says If my name is not in it, I am fine with it.
