My anecdote
Before I sign off tonight, I just want to give a few words of encouragement. Nothing is impossible if you put your heart into it. I started off by reading Bangkok Post when I was still a Mor 4 student. In the middle school, I did really well in English but it was only because it was simply a rote lesson and I went home every night trying to memorize every word I learnt from the book and came to school the next day and beat the whole class.
I scored the highest in our English class during the dictation test. But you know how bad I was when it came to writing? I sucked at it. I could not write properly. Composing a complex sentence was already a gruesome task. As for my speaking, I did not know how terrible I was until I got to have a few conversations with an exchange student from the United States. I could not carry the conversation beyond what was taught in an English class which was merely how to say “hi” “how are you” “I’m fine, thank you and you”.
When I tried to talk about other things, I found myself struggling for words even though I had probably had about 400 English words in my memory at my disposal. But none of them came in handy at the time. Then I realized what I lacked. I did know enough English expressions. If I m not wrong, the Thai education system has taught us from the very young age the grammar rules.
If you are 24 years old or older, you should have learnt by now everything there is to know about English grammar. But if your answer is no, It is not your fault either. While I was developing my own approach, I also kept a personal journal in English. I did it for months until I got bored and moved on to reading the movie scripts. Writing your own diary is a good way to keep your vocabulary fresh and build a new set of words in your memory. Even to these days, my approach has never changed. I m still doing exactly what I have said in the earlier posts and I m getting better at it.
