"Take the wind out of (one's) sails" ----> make it impossible for a person to say what he intended, either (i) by anticipating him, or (ii) by cutting the ground from under his feet by revealing something that changes the circumstances, so that the intended remark would be inappropriate.
Ex: I had made up my mind what I was going to say, but the news quite took the wind out of my sails. ---------------------------------------
