To improve listening comprehension, you should study all the sounds in the English language:

^ From this chart, you should learn sound discrimination at varying speed, rhythm and intonation.
You should also learn that in connected speech (when people speak quickly and naturally), the following situations occur:
1. sounds disappear; 2. sounds join together; 3. sounds change.

If you learn by trial and error, it takes a long time. If a good teacher teaches you, it speeds up the learning process. When I say 'good teacher' I mean 'the teacher who is an expert in phonetics and phonology'.
