Thai men should be ordained as a Buddhist monk
In Thailand, a Buddhist man, who is 20 years old, is usually ordained as a Buddhist monk once in his life at an early age. While the monk is ordaining, he can show his gratitude to his parents, also study the teachings of Buddha and practice Buddha’s virtues in order to achieve the ultimate goal in Buddhism which is well known the nirvana. Many of Thai men, however, would not like to be a monk because they rebut that being a monk is not necessary at the present. They claim that those goals can be done even though they are laymen. Although some evidence shows that being a Buddhist monk is not needed, there is some evidence that being a monk is still important for Thai males.
Opponents claim that every human has basic needs to survive; consequently, to support the needs for parents is enough, and the basic needs can be afforded by money. Therefore, money is the best way to show their parents gratitude. The opposing argument may be true, but they ignore the fact that being alive by the needs sometimes does not mean that a man can live happily. For this reason, being a monk can show sons’ gratitude more than by just offering the basic needs. This is because the principle of ordination is to earn merit (Kuson) for Thai men and their families, their parents especially (Ferguson, 1998). Those Thai men, who are monks, must chant every morning and evening in order to gain merit. After they finish chanting, they always extend their merits or kindness to their parents, all living things and dead people. Besides, one of Buddhist monks’ important responsibilities is to address sermons or what they have studied from the teachings of Buddha to their parents to practice so that the parents can adapt their son’s sermons to live carefully and happily.
Opponents still say that working for living by applying what they have learnt in college is enough; therefore, there is no need to be a monk to study the teachings of Buddha. Although the argument may be true,one need to apply not only his background knowledge but also some virtues (teachings) for working and living to succeed in life, especially Buddha’s virtues (Bunnag, 1998, p. 159). They are always up-to-date; more importantly, they can be applied to every human. For example, Gharavasa-Dhama four (the virtues for laypeople) consist of Sacca: truth and honesty, Dama: self-development, Khanti: tolerance and Caga: liberity and generosity (Buddhism’s Bureau of Nation, 2007). The virtues are absolutely important for laypeople because if the laypeople become monks, they need to study and practice the teachings all the time even though they are out of monkhood. A man, who practices the teachings all the time, can become successful in work undoubtedly by applying them while working because he will be an honest worker, self-developed, tolerate and liberal or generous which is what is needed for teamwork. In addition, the four noble truths (suffering, the cause of suffering, the cessation of suffering and the paths tothe cessation of suffering), which is like the steps of scientific methods from observation, hypothesis, prediction and tests of the problem, will be practiced by every Buddhist monk inevitably. This is obvious that a monk needs to do everything systematically and reasonably. This will be very helpful when he stops his monkhood. These are the differences between being a monk and a layman.

The final argument of opponents is that a layman could achieve the nirvana (Buddhism’s Bureau of Nation, 2007); therefore, they are no longer ordained to reach the goal. However, such an argument is invalid. Evidence shows that the argument is impossible because there is only a layman that could achieve the ultimate goal which is King Sudhodana (Buddhism’s Bureau of Nation, 2007). Moreover, the characteristics of a true or actual monk are 20 years old or more, not a murderer, not in debt and not suffering from any illness (Busswell, 2004). These characteristics are evident that the monk will practice the teaching efficiently and effectively. As a result, it is certain that the monk has more opportunities to reach such a goal than a layman because he always practices the teachings. It is true that the more he practices, the easier he will achieve that goal.

It is completely evident that the arguments against being a monk of Thai men are invalid. In contrast, many evidence found that being a monk is better than a layman. A monk can undoubtedly give his parents more than the basic needs. He also studies and practices the Buddha’s teachings and applies it when he is not a monk. Finally, it is easier for him to be enlightened. Therefore, Thai males should be ordained as a Buddhist monk when they are 20 years old or more.
