Dear บุษกร,
Your written Thai is very good considering that you have studied it only for 6 months. I had to study English for more than 10 years before I could write it to save my life! Anyway, let me help you correct a few mistakes:
สวัสดีคะ should be สวัสดีค่ะ
ฉันพยายามเรียนพิมพ์ดีดและสะกดในภาสาไทยคะ should be ฉันพยายามเรียนพิมพ์ดีดและสะกดในถาษาไทยค่ะ
Mind you, Thai women, especially the younger generation, even find the word คะ and ค่ะ madly confusing. Take a look at these examples:
Now, can you tell me when you should use the word คะ and when you should use the word ค่ะ? If you dont know, dont worry. Many young Thai women cant answer this question either. If you can come up with the right answers, it means you know Thai grammar better than many native speakers of Thai.
Cheers, sweetnothings
^ ซึ่งเป็นการยกตัวอย่างจากการจำแต่ไม่ได้พูดเรื่องไวยากรณ์
จากนั้นคนที่ชื่อ DonSena อธิบายไวยกรณ์ ซึ่งมีชื่อเรียกว่า codaphrase
Hi, Brittney. The third-position sentence particle referring to a female speaker is ค่ะ for all declarative sentences and greetings that are expressed as a statement. For any form of a question, even a weakly-stated question that occurs merely as an observation not requiring corroboration, the particle of choice is คะ . Thus, คุณทราบไหมคะ ว่าแหวนของฉันอยู่ที่ไหน ฉันเห็นไม่พบเลยค่ะ นี่ไงค่ะ อยู่ในลิ้นชัก เธอจะมาดูเอาเองนะคะ The last sentence clause is suggestive in nature and occurs only as a very weakly expressed question. It uses the question form of the paritcle, even though a response is not required by the speaker. The sex-marker particles occur in the third of four possible positions of a codaphrase. ไง is a position-one partice, and นะ is a position-two particle. Not all four positons in the codaphrase need be occupied, and a position-four parfticle is only rarely used. As you might expect, all particles assigned to any one slot in the codaphrase are mutually exclusive.
DonSena

Codaphrase is a new term for me. I know this site uses "particles" for such words Donsena has listed as codaphrases. Is there a reference for the term codaphrase? Thank you for that exhaustive list of whatever they're called. jariya76 Posts: 470 Joined: Sun Feb 21, 2010 8:31 pm Top Re: สวัสดีคะ by sweetnothings » Tue Sep 14, 2010 1:44 pm
Hi DonSena,
I must say that you are highly proficient in the Thai language. Youve come up with an interesting analysis of the usage of คะ and ค่ะ. To be honest with you, I dont even know the rules; I just know whether it sounds right or wrong.
As for คุณทราบไหมคะ ว่าแหวนของฉันอยู่ที่ไหน ฉันเห็นไม่พบเลยค่ะ นี่ไงค่ะ อยู่ในลิ้นชัก เธอจะมาดูเอาเองนะคะ, youve only got this one wrong นี่ไงค่ะ. It should be นี่ไงคะ. Did you mistype it, by the way? Sorry, your rules are too complicated for me; I didnt test them in all situations.
Now, watch these two carefully: นี่หละค่ะ is correct while นี่หละคะ is wrong. I cant tell you the reasons. I just know by the sound of it. If your rules work in all situations, fine. If not, you have to come up with another analysis.

Hello, Jariya and SweetNothings ... A sentence particle fills one of the four slots of the codaphrase. The codaphrase can consist of one, two, three or four particles. Notice where I sub-grouped sets of mutually exclusive particles in positions (or "slots") 1, 2, 3 and 4. Appararently, นี่ไงคะ is too suggestive for the declarative ค่ะ, though I took it to be saying quite definitively: Here it is! นี่หละค่ะ is easier to understand. The second-position of the codaphrase can be filled with either หละ, แหละ or เออะ, or any of numerous others. All second-position particles are mututally exclusive -- only one (at most) can be chosen. The particles หละ, แหละ and เออะ have the meaning "Here's the thing we were looking for!" or "So, that's it!" or "That's what it is!" Consider: ฉันไม่ได้ไปไหนเลยหละค่ะ "I didn't go anywhere AT ALL!" Likewise, นี่หละค่ะ means "This is just what it is!" We see, then, that the use of หละ, แหละ or เออะ reveals an attitude of conviction on the part of the speaker, forcing the use of the declarative ค่ะ.

Maybe I have used this phrase incorrectly then. For me this is almost a question. Someone is looking for a pencil, can't find one, you find one right in front of his nose hold it in front of him and say/ask, in English, "So what's this?" นี่ไงคะ Almost like "It's right here stupid!" I never used this phrase with my elders in this context, no matter how polite the คะ at the end might make it. However, I might use it when I was making a flower garland and wanted confimation that I was doing it okay so I would show it to my host mother and ask, "How's this?" นี่ไงคะ? Native speakers - have I been misusing this? jariya76 Posts: 470 Joined: Sun Feb 21, 2010 8:31 pm Top Re: สวัสดีคะ by Nan » Sat Sep 18, 2010 4:41 pm

Khun Julie kha,
It's polite to say นี่ไงคะ in this case. It would be a bit rude if you say "แล้วนี่อะไร", but I often said it with my husband when he couldn't find something which was right in front of him.
For example;
A: นี่เธอ กางเกงใส่วิ่งของฉันอยู่ไหน B: (point at his shorts which is right in front of him and say) แล้วนี่อะไร (You would get this look ) Or นี่ไงคะ (You might get a sniff kiss for being sweet. )
jariya76 wrote: However, I might use it when I was making a flower garland and wanted confimation that I was doing it okay so I would show it to my host mother and ask, "How's this?" นี่ไงคะ?
In this case, you should ask "(นี่)เป็นยังไงคะ" for "How's this?"

คุณดอนคะ
ปกติคำว่า "หละ" จะไม่ใช้ในกรณีนี้นะคะ แล้วที่ถูกต้องเขียนว่า "ล่ะ" แต่ถ้าเขียนแบบไม่เป็นทางการมักจะใช้ "หละ" แทน "ล่ะ"
นี่แหละ - "This is just what it is!"
For example:
A: คุณเห็นกล่องใบเล็ก ๆ ที่ผมวางอยู่บนโต๊ะหรือเปล่า B: กล่องอะไร After seaching for awhile; B: ใบนี้ใช่ไหม A: นี่แหละ ใช่เลย Nan Posts: 2569 Joined: Mon Feb 28, 2005 12:00 am Location: Bangkok Top Re: สวัสดีคะ by pensive » Mon Sep 20, 2010 2:14 am
Well, this is how to say certain things in Thai, whereas DonSena's point related to the subchannel messaging in the codaphrase. Richard Noss wrote about it in 1964 and I was interested in seeing it here in a modern context. Thank you DonSena.
On a personal note, I don't undertsand all these sentence particles, and when my wife uses "la", I ask her why she did that. I guess this is a tease as she can't answer my question. Just skirting "na", which is the obvious one, I also ask her why she uses "ni". In my mind "ni" and "la" are the interesting ones. pensive Posts: 930 Joined: Wed Apr 14, 2010 8:40 am Location: Melbourne Top Re: สวัสดีคะ by David and Bui » Mon Sep 20, 2010 3:12 am
For those of you who wish to read the original, the text is "Foreign Service Institute Thai Reference Grammar", Richard B. Noss, Washington D.C. 1964. The discussion regarding codaphrases begins on page 206 of that text.
The text can be downloaded from http://ia341339.us.archive.org/3/items/ ... rammar.pdf . David in Houston David and Bui Posts: 2754 Joined: Sat May 14, 2005 12:00 am Location: Houston, Texas Top Re: สวัสดีคะ by DonSena » Tue Sep 21, 2010 5:55 am
Do indeed get the analysis by Richard B. Noss. Scrutinize the entire text. It is probably still the best single treatment of the subject to date. While it is linguistically-oriented, it is not too dry. The transcription he uses is slightly better than the one used here, as he uses one fewer non-Roman-based characters. There is much information of importance on important distinctive features like rhythm, stress and pitch contours. Master all of it.

ขอโทษทีมันยาวเราไม่มีแรงแปลให้ แต่ลองไปอ่านดูดีๆ จะรู้ว่า
"คะ" หรือ "ค่ะ" จะพูดหรือเขียนถูกหรือผิด มันเป็นที่ไวยกรณ์ซึ่งมีชื่อเรียกว่า codaphrase แต่มันไม่ได้เกี่ยวกับการผันวรรณยุกต์ผิดแต่อย่างใดเลย!
