I got 3 Fs and my grade was also terrible. Yet I could win a no-string attached scholarship in 1983 to study for a master degree in any country. I chose the US.
The test comprised English and Aptitude papers (in English). Three hours for English and 2 hours for Aptitude paper, ie, the whole day spent sitting for the test. The competition was very tough, 1750 applicants with only 3 scholarships available.
I could still remember that about 12 passed the written test and after the interview only 3 were the winners. I was one of the three.
Miracle did happen if you worked/studied hard by yourself throughout your life. I got this scholarship when I was 30.
