But a new study suggests that calling attention to the words and letters on the page may lead to better readers. The two-year study compared children who were read to this way in class with children who were not. Those whose teachers most often discussed the print showed clearly higher skills in reading, spelling and understanding. These results were found one year and even two years later. Shayne Piasta, an assistant professor of teaching and learning at Ohio State University, was an author of the study. She says most preschool teachers would find this method manageable and would need only a small change in the way they teach. They already read storybooks in class. The only difference would be increased attention to the printed text. Ms. Piasta says if you get children to pay attention to letters and words, it makes sense that they will do better at word recognition and spelling. But she says research suggests that very few parents and teachers do this in a systematic way. The report appears in the journal Child Development. More than three hundred children age four and five were observed in classrooms in Ohio and Virginia. The children came from poor families and were below average in their language skills. This put them at risk for reading problems later. For thirty weeks, the children took part in a program called Project STAR, for Sit Together And Read. The project is based at Ohio State. It tests the short-term and long-term results of reading regularly to preschool children in their classrooms. Laura Justice at Ohio State says researchers think they understand how information about print is transmitted from the adult to the child. This knowledge can be gained by having focused discussions when reading a book out loud. Professor Justice say this intervention can help adults "center in on the things that children need and want to learn." There are different ways that adults can talk to children about print. They can point to a letter and discuss it, and even trace the shape with a finger. They can point out a word: "This is 'dog.'" They can discuss the meaning of the print or how the words tell the story. And they can talk about the organization of the print -- for instance, showing how words are written left to right in English. For VOA Special English, I'm Carolyn Presutti. It tells about President Abraham Lincoln, who was shot in the theater just after the civil war ended. The new center has a 10-meter-high tower of 7,000 books about the president. Tracey Avant says there are more books about Abraham Lincoln than about any other American. TRACEY AVANT: "He's just continued to be fascinating, and people throughout every generation seem to want to redefine who Abraham Lincoln is to them." The center has a re-creation of the train car that carried Mr. Lincoln's body. There also is a re-creation of the building where John Wilkes Booth -- the president's killer -- was himself shot and killed. Charlie Doer likes the computerized exhibits. CHARLIE DOER: "I think it's pretty cool, pretty high tech for Abraham Lincoln." The center was opened to answer questions about the president. TRACEY AVANT: "And he's still very relevant to us today, so we want people to walk away having a better understanding of what it was about Abraham Lincoln that made him relevant, makes him relevant today and has made him such a popular president."  The civil war began after 11 southern states split from the north over the rights of states, including slavery. The center's Tracy Avant says some people questioned President Lincoln's actions, but he was respected. TRACEY AVANT: "It has a lot to do with his leadership style, and his personality, the things that he championed. The fact that he had an ability to relate to the common person because he had come from, you know, humble roots himself." The center shows other American presidents and world leaders who have used the words of President Lincoln. TRACEY AVANT: "His writing encompassed really big ideas, championed important issues, but he wrote in a very eloquent but very simple style which was not really the tradition at the time."  The center has created a video showing Americans using the words of President Lincoln. But pregnant women need extra iron for their own health and their baby's health. Iron is important to the development of a baby's brain and central nervous system. In poor countries, however, providing all pregnant women with iron supplements can be a financial issue. Some experts say giving supplements to babies after they are born is enough. Someone who disagrees is Parul Christian, a nutritionist at the Johns Hopkins School of Public Health in Maryland. She and other scientists have been doing research in Nepal. She says their latest findings should settle any question about the value of making sure every pregnant woman receives iron supplements. Iron is a micronutrient. Micronutrients are important substances that are found in small amounts in foods. The researchers first completed a study among poor women in Nepal ten years ago. During pregnancy some of the women received supplements containing iron and another micronutrient, folic acid. Ms. Christian says that study showed the supplements could improve child survival. Now the children are older. The researchers returned to Nepal and tested their neurological development. They found improved abilities among those whose mothers had received iron and folic acid during pregnancy and for three months after. Another new study looks at levels of vitamin D in babies. It says newborns with the lowest levels were twice as likely to develop respiratory infections as those with normal levels of vitamin D. Vitamin D helps build strong bones and strengthens the body's defenses against disease. The vitamin is commonly added to cow's milk and also found in supplements. Vitamin D is called the sunshine vitamin. The body naturally produces it from sunlight. Carlos Camargo from Harvard Medical School in Massachusetts and other researchers did the study. It followed more than nine hundred children in New Zealand until they were five years old. Dr. Camargo said the problem of vitamin D deficiency is not limited to countries with the least sun. There are low levels of vitamin D in people living in areas where there is a lot of sun. This is because people are spending more time indoors. This is the starting point for Linda Glover Gooch. Little by little, the image starts to form. Thousands of people take pictures of the Grand Canyon every day in hopes of capturing its beauty. Linda Glover Gooch could have stayed home and copied a photograph of the canyon. But she says that would not be the same. LINDA GLOVER GOOCH: "Oh, there is a huge difference because you are in the atmosphere. You feel the air. Photos are nice, but they still lose some of the feeling that's out there. And you experience it, you know, firsthand, so your emotions are there at the same time as you are doing the work." This is what artists call plein air painting, in which the changing light and environment affect the work. Scott Kraynak is with the National Park Service. SCOTT KRAYNAK: "It's painting quickly in nature to capture fleeting moments in nature of the light." The National Park Service invites artists to make paintings that will later be sold. The money helps to pay for the building of an art gallery. Kraynak says many people first came to know the Grand Canyon through paintings. SCOTT KRAYNAK: "Not many people, I think, realize the importance of art in the national parks. Art first gave people a glimpse of what these areas looked like in the West, before TV and Internet. Art was a big factor in these areas being set aside. Art was big factor of popularizing national parks." The works of Linda Glover Gooch can be seen in places like the Lawrence Gallery in Scottsdale, Arizona. Her paintings offer images of nature and the desert to collectors who want to take some of the beauty home with them. LINDA GLOVER GOOCH: "I want to get that light on that point because it's only going to be there for an hour more, maybe, or a little less. It's really bright." Gooch spent all day at the Grand Canyon to produce this one small painting. But she says there is nowhere else she would rather be. LINDA GLOVER GOOCH: "Words can't explain it. It is just a gorgeous place. It's challenging. It's always changing. The weather is never the same. It gives you a lot of views. You could paint the rest of your life out here and always see something different." In the end, her painting of this one part of the canyon is complete and ready for showing. However, the ever-changing appearance of the canyon makes her want to return and paint another day. The building stood in the middle of Manhattan for more than 50 years. Today, only the underground area remains. Lorraine Diehl wrote a book about Penn Station. She remembers playing there as a child. LORRAINE DIEHL: "Every space just sort of triggered your imagination. For instance, when you walk in from Eighth Avenue, that was the great train shed, the concourse, and it was this extraordinary space of great vaulted iron columns and a glass ceiling, and the dust particles would just drift in and just be frozen in space. And you felt that this was a room of journeys. Your mind took a journey before you ever got on a train in this space." The old Penn Station was covered with statues of eagles and young women. Artist William Low never saw the building. But he used old pictures and descriptions to make a picture book about it. WILLIAM LOW: "It's just awe-inspiring. It would be like the first time I saw the Grand Canyon. The idea of this immense space -- you can't put it into words." Low painted the separate rooms of the station: the concourse, the restaurants and waiting room. The Pennsylvania Railroad Company was the owner of Penn Station. By the early 1960s, the company was failing. So it sold the above-ground building to the developers of a sports center -- Madison Square Garden. WILLIAM LOW: "It was torn down. And the sculptures were ripped apart and unceremoniously dragged and dumped into the New Jersey Meadowlands." Only six architects protested when the building came down in 1963. Sl:-), other people came to regret the loss. This led to New York's Landmarks Protection laws. PEG BREEN: "Nobody is happy with Penn Station as it exists in New York today. People who never even saw the original Penn Station mourn its loss. It was probably the greatest architectural crime that has been committed in New York City." Peg Breen heads the New York Landmarks Conservancy. Her group has been working to turn an old Post Office building across the street into a new version of Penn Station. PEG BREEN: "This was built in 1912 by Charles McKim, the architect of Pennsylvania Station, and it's the architectural twin to the old Penn Station. It was built when public spaces were built to honor the public, and when you walked into a building, it said, you know, 'This is a great city, you are a good citizen in a wonderful space.'" The changes are expected to cost more than $1 billion. The building can never really take the place of the old Penn Station. But Breen's group says it will give train passengers arriving in New York a beautiful door into the city. An old document shows that Dutch settlers did, in fact, pay for this land. The document can be seen at the citys South Street Seaport Museum. Martin Berense is head of the Netherlands National Archives. He says the letter tells about a ship arriving in Amsterdam. The ships operator said, The settlement is going well. And, we bought the island of Manhattan for sixty guilders. The letter is on loan for New Yorks four hundredth anniversary.  Berendse says the letter tells about the settlement, which became New York. The museum also has a map of the settlement. Another map shows just how small Manhattan was. That changed when Britain took control. Historian Barry Lewis says the British filled in part of the East River with waste because more land was needed. BARRY LEWIS: We had only about one hundred thousand people at the beginning of the nineteenth century. By 1875, the population of Manhattan is over one-million people. By 1910, over two million people are living in Manhattan island. The Brooklyn Bridge was built in eighteen eighty-three so people could move to Long Island, where land was less costly.  Lewis says people crossed the East River by carriage or boat. Or they walked across the bridge. He says New Yorks underground trains led to the development of land in areas far from the center of the city. Many businesses needed to be in Manhattan. So developers started building up, creating the skyscraper. BARRY LEWIS: People were afraid it would fall down in the first windstorm. And anyone who had property in the commercial buildings next to it, they were terrified that no one would rent in their buildings because that thing was next door. But more and more skyscrapers were built. Each one was higher than the next. Lewis says the big reason for so many skyscrapers was money. He says New York was built by investments in land. That is not why everything was built. Some structures have improved the look of the city. Two examples are the Washington Square Arch and the Guggenheim Museum. But money is still important on the island that began as a trading century four centuries ago. The area the Dutch settled is now Wall Street, the worlds financial capital.
