I like a new week with a fresh topic.  I like reading but I don't call myself a bookworm because I don't read that often.  My favorite genres are fantasy, travel, and of course, romance!  Only when I get hooked to a really good book, I stay up all night reading. Although I haven't done that lately. Last time I did that, it must have been HP and the Deathly Hallows. I pre-ordered the book off Amazon.com and it arrived on the day it was officially released in bookstores in USA and Canada and I finished it in 2 days. (I can be obsessed sometimes.) I'm now reading Bill Bryson's old book called Neither Here Nor There. I got it from a garage sale. It's about his backpacking trip in Europe. It's hilarious. He exaggerates a lot in his writing which makes it funny and I love his humor.  I would like share some of the funny stuff in this book: The French, for instance, cannot get the hang of queuing. They try and try, but it is beyond them. Wherever you go in Paris, you see orderly lines waiting at bus stops, but as soon as the bus pulls up the line instantly disintegrates into something like a fire drill at a lunatic asylum as everyone scrambles to be the first aboard, quite unaware that this defeats the whole purpose of queuing. The problem with using the "Rich Mode" is you can't fix it without messing it up. ความคิดเห็นที่ 5 Hi! I'd actually been waiting for this new thread since I was up this morning and man what a topic! This is a very topic that I am much interested in, yes, I am what you call a bookworm. I love reading and I can read just about anything. Below are the books that I am to finish now. LOL My all time favorite is the Study series by Maria V. Snyder. It is actually for young adult but I found it very enjoyable and I love it so much. I love it so much that I translated the first (of the three books) into Thai so that other people can enjoy it too since it's not translated into Thai yet. All my (small group of ) fans are crying for the second one which I would really like to keep doing the work but am not able to since the books were lent to someone and never returned. This series is a fantasy which is not the kind of novel that I would normally read. I was introduced to a fantasy by my cousin with Vampire Academy by Richelle Mead. At first I doubted if this kind of novel would be too young for me but she said she was 45 and loved it so there shouldn't be any problems for me. So I started with that and, man, I so fell in love with it! I spent seven days to finish seven books in the series. It was then that I started to look for another fantasies and found this bundle sale for $30 of the Study series. At first I didn't expect much of it because I thought it sold the three books together at a very low price was because the books couldn't sell so they tried to get rid of them quickly by selling the whole series at once. However, I knew I was totally wrong after I started the first book. I started reading at about 10 o'clock at night, and before I knew it, it was 2 in the morning and I had quite a bit to go before finishing it so I went ahead and finished at 4! So, again, I spent three nights to finish the three books and then started to translate it because I couldn't get enough of it. At the back cover it said 'it's the rare book that will keep you dreaming long after you finish it' and I found that it was so true. It wasn't actual dream while you are sleeping but it's that you think about it all the time and can't get it off of your head. This is really sad. :'( I remembered I failed 3 out of 4 units in my first semester of the university. Not that I was stupid or anything but I was busy reading 10 novels which my dad just sent to me during the exam period. To be honest I don't like they way they described vampires as "cold" or "marble-like". I couldn't contain my naughty thought about their "something something" activities, what it would feel like... stiff and cold?? hahaha.. (I'm sorry if what I said was inappropriate.) Khun Lovely Creature, Have you heard of "How to Win Friends and Influence People by Dale Carnegie"? It's categorized as a self-help book. I have an audio version of that and probably listened to it 3 times already. It really is one of the most practical books I've ever read (listened to, in this case). Carnegie encouraged positive ways for handling people from different types of environment. This book helped improve my social skills tremendously.  Another interesting book I read many many years ago was "Blink: The Power of Thinking without Thinking by Malcom Gladwell". In this book, he shows examples how snap judgements can be more accurate than a well studied analysis. ความคิดเห็นที่ 25 Talking about books that cost more these days, you know in the States or Canada people don't always buy books. They go to the library. Books can be checked out for 3 weeks at a time and you can extend that twice (at least that's what they do where I am.) Some libraries allow you to borrow up to 60 items at a time.  Libraries in the US are usually funded by the county, state, or whatever. It depends on where you live, some towns have the most extravaganza libraries, some look like shacks (usually in a poor area where the state can't earn a lot of property tax). I'd lived in Calgary, Alberta for some time and their public library system is super awesome. There must be at least 10 libraries around the city, I'm not positive. But you can borrow books from one branch and return at a different location. There are CDs, DVDs, internet, quiet rooms available as well, typical for libraries in the western world, I guess. One of them is located in a huge complex where there are schools, recreation center, YMCA, swimming pool, hockey arenas, and all that. There are couches next to a fireplace for readers. It's a paradise for bookworms (and non-bookworm alike.) Food and drinks are allowed, they even have a cafe next to it that shares a window so that readers can order some snack. One good thing about reading ebooks is that you can double click words you don't know and the dictionary pops up, making your life easier. (See picture attached.) ความคิดเห็นที่ 29 The first few unputdownable novels that I read were the works of Dennis Wheatley on the occult.  My friend happened to leave those books around, so I just picked them up and enjoyed them.   After that, I haven't read novels for so many decades. I found that I wasn't intelligent enough to finish my college, so I read nothing but books on self improvement and how to increase my iq. Next, I adopted some new concepts on self improvement through Zen Macrobiotic diet, Daoist meditation and Qi Gong (breathing exercise).  I just hope that the training in esoteric arts would bring about sublimation and biological transmutation, the state in which I attain ultimate wisdom and eternal youth.   I constantly long for more esoteric knowledge that I dare not waste my time reading any more novels. Just recently, I translated some romance novels for a local publisher.  Reading the sexually explicit love scenes during the translation process, I ran away with my wildly creative imaginations. Then, I reflected upon my legal translation skills acquired earlier through precise logic.  Now, the two basic polarities (yin and yang) are in fact combined in perfect harmony. I just don't like the fact that most of the girls in the entire world praise about it too much. I don't even like the actors and actresses in the movie. They don't look that good, just average looking teenagers. I don't know why people talk about it so highly. In the Vampires Academy series, there are three kinds of vampires. The Strigoi- the evil undead vampire, the Moroi-the weak blood drinking vampire, and the Dhampir-the human like vampire. Dhampir is half human half vampire race and have human appearance. They are physically strong, thus, trained to be guardians for moroi. Because they are crossed race, they can't reproduce, so they have to mate with moroi. But what usually happens is that moroi male will come to the dhampir commune and have sex with dhampir female then leave leaving dhampir baby with the mother because most morois won't be married with dhampirs but morois. The dhampirs have to put up with that because it's the way that their race remains. Dhampirs don't drink blood and sun cannot harm them. If they are among humans, you wouldn't be able to tell the difference. The main characters, Rose and Dimitri, are dhampirs and are guardians. I LOVE DIMITRI!! (oops!) Moroi is the blood drinking vampire. They are skinny, pale, and weak. They can be harmed by sun but not killed. They are kind of the upper class vampire. They drink blood to survive but they don't kill their feed. Normally, their feed will be the volunteered humans. Strigoi is the evil vampire. They are immortal but can be destroy by sun and be killed by a wooden stake piercing through their hearts. They kill their feed by draining them. They like to drink from Moroi because it makes them stronger. That's why the Moroi has to be guarded by guardians. They can increase their population quickly too by killing their victims and feed blood back to them. Moroi and dhampir call that action "turn" while they call it "awaken". I don't even recall that vampires hate garlic. Most of the books mention about cross, though. Valek is the main character in the Study series that I talked about earlier. It's very fun and highly recommended! You should read it ka. I choose to read it because I saw the trailer which the story itself is really interesting and fascinating for me. Young adult fiction is another kind I like. No matter how many pages, if it fun, I can finish it in a couple of days. My favorite authors in this field are Sophie Kinsella, Simone Elkeles, John Green etc. Additionally, I like reading some classic novels too, such as Anna Karenina. I think this pretty much it. *i edited some content because i spot some mistakes by myself. ps. It might be some grammatically mistakes. I'm quite sure of it.
