Microsoft Corporation organizes the competition every year. The Imagine Cup asks students to use their imaginations and their love of technology to solve some of the world's biggest problems. More than one hundred thousand students in the United States alone registered for the event this year. Twenty-two teams were chosen to take part in the finals in Seattle, Washington. Team FlashFood won first place in the Imagine Cup's Software Design competition. The team developed a computer software application and website to help speed food donations from restaurants, hotels and farmers markets to needy families. Eric Lehnhardt is the leader of Team FlashFood. He says food insecurity affects a lot of people, especially in large population centers. He notes that some people do not know where their next meal is coming from. His team's winning mobile application and website is designed for operators of restaurants. They can enter information about the food they would like to donate. Then volunteer drivers go to pick up the donations and take them to those in need. Richard Filley is director of the Engineering Projects in Community Service program at Arizona State. Team FlashFood is one of the program's thirty-seven projects. Richard Filley says winning the Imagine Cup's Software design category is a major honor. But, he says, it is not what energizes his students. He says they want to change the world and make a difference. Microsoft is celebrating the tenth year of the Imagine Cup. Mark Hindsbo is a vice president with the company. He says the competition has changed a lot since it first began. Years ago, it mainly involved computer science and almost all of the students had a computer science education. Mark Hindsbo says the students who compete now have different areas of expertise. For example, Team FlashFood had a student who studied biomedical engineering. Mister Geithner was among top officials from both countries who gathered in Beijing for the U.S.-China Strategic Dialogue. Their goal was to increase cooperation on security and economic issues.Secretary of State Hillary Clinton spoke as the meeting opened on May third. She said the two sides were working to build a relationship so that both countries grow without unhealthy competition or conflict. She noted that nations must deal with issues of economics and international politics in a way that is not 'win or lose', or what she called zero-sum. Secretary Clinton also said that both the United States and China have to meet responsibilities to their own citizens and the international community. The value of China's money, the yuan, was among the economic issues discussed at the meeting. In early May, the exchange rate was over six yuan to the American dollar. The United States says China intervenes in foreign currency markets to keep the exchange value of the yuan low. A lower value means Chinese exports are less costly than their competitors. Critics also say China unfairly supports its industries with many other forms of government support. Last year, America's trade deficit with China reached a record two hundred ninety-five billion dollars. At the talks with American officials, Chinese Vice Premier Wang Qishan defended his country's money policy. He said China is moving at a measured rate to make its currency more flexible. And he urged the United States not to "politicize" economic issues. Mister Wang also called on the United States to ease controls on high-technology exports and increase Chinese access to financial markets. Secretary Geithner said China had moved toward a better way of valuing the yuan. But he said more reform was needed. He said a strong, more market-determined yuan will help strengthen China's economic reform goal of moving toward higher value-added production. A group of environmental organizations released a report on the issue in February. The "Reefs at Risk Revisited" report used new information and improved satellite mapping systems to study the world's coral reefs. For the first time, it also considered the effect of climate change on these threatened sea organisms. Jane Lubchenco is administrator of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, or NOAA. She says the problem is serious. JANE LUBCHENCO: "Approximately 75 percent of the world's coral reefs are currently threatened by a combination of local and global pressures." Lubchenco says the threat to coral reefs will continue to increase unless something is done to save them. JANE LUBCHENCO: "If the current trend persists, the projections in this report tell us that 20 years from now, roughly half the reefs globally will experience thermal stress sufficient to induce severe bleaching in most years. Within the next 50 years this percentage is expected to grow more than 95 percent." Nancy Knowlton is with the Smithsonian Institution. She says the threat to coral reefs could have a major effect on sea life. NANCY KNOWLTON: "It's been estimated that about one - at least one quarter, maybe as much as one third, of all species that live in the ocean live associated with coral reefs. So perhaps it is not too surprising that even more recently an analysis was done that suggests that one third of all coral species are actually at risk of extinction. This makes corals the most endangered animal on the planet, even more endangered than frogs." Millions of species of sea life depend on coral reefs for their survival. This makes them an important source of food for millions of people around the world. Coral reefs also protect coastlines from storms and flooding. And, they provide economic security for many countries. LAURETTA BURKE: "Tourism is an important economic contributor in over 95 countries and territories around the world. It contributes over 20 percent of GDP in over 20 countries." Lauretta Burke is with the World Resources Institute. She was one of the lead writers of the report. She says more than 275-million people are dependent on the resources from coral reefs, mostly in Southeast Asia and the Indian Ocean. The report noted overfishing and climate change as two of the most serious threats to the world's oceans. It said higher acidity levels caused by carbon dioxide emissions are also a problem. Other threats include the use of explosives for fishing, as well as the run-off of toxic materials and other pollution. LAURETTA BURKE: "Overfishing is the most widespread threat affecting about 55 percent of the world's reefs. The threat is particularly high in Southeast Asia. Watershed based pollution and coastal development affect roughly a quarter of the world's reefs." Burke says while the reefs around Australia are the best preserved, those in Southeast Asia are the most threatened. Ninety percent of them are at risk, largely because of overfishing. The report says coral reefs are critically important. It says better management practices and policies must be established to reduce the threats to these valuable ecosystems. Last year, the Walt Disney Family Museum opened in California. Richard Benefield is head of the museum. RICHARD BENEFIELD: Well, this Museum is really about the man, Walt Disney. Walt Disney, during his lifetime, received 932 awards for his public service to mankind as well as for his professional achievements. And in this lobby area, we have 248. Disney received 32 awards from Americas motion picture industry. Benefield says they include a special award for the film Snow White and the Seven Dwarves. The pictures and videos in the museum show the private side of Walt Disney. RICHARD BENEFIELD: This entire wall has drawings that were done by Walt while he was in high school. Disney was born in 1901 in Chicago. At the age of 20, he went to Hollywood. RICHARD BENEFIELD: This wall here, he had just started to do a prototype of something called The Alice Comedies. The Alice Comedies used images of a live-action girl and an animated cat. Disneys big success came after he finished an animated story about a mouse. He and his wife Lilly decided on a name for the mouse while going to Hollywood. RICHARD BENEFIELD: And on that fateful trip from New York to Hollywood, Walt came up with the idea of using a mouse for his next cartoon character. And he said to Lilly, What about Mickey Mouse? And, she said, Thats good. I think that will do just fine. And thats how Mickey Mouse was born in 1928 on a train ride from New York to Hollywood. This is the earliest known picture of Mickey Mouse. Steamboat Willie was Disneys first film to combine voice, music and animated images. He used beats from a bouncing ball so that the sound would agree with the images. Yet Disneys life was not always happy. RICHARD BENEFIELD: In 1940, Walt lost both of his parents, and not shortly after that his company experienced a very divisive strike. It was the early days of the labor movement in the United States. He was very hurt by the strike, which shut down operations for quite a period of time. But Disney recovered, and his company went on to produce films like Peter Pan and 101 Dalmatians. He also had the idea for theme parks that celebrated the stars of his movies. RICHARD BENEFIELD: This walk down the ramp in general celebrates Walts love of trains, and how that led him to really found Disneyland which, of course, one of the first rides at Disneyland was a train that ran all around the park. Walt Disney died of lung cancer in 1966. He was 65 years old. TV ANNOUNCER: "Walt Disney, the master of an entertainment empire, the most complete and influential showman of this generation, died. This week we learn how to protect vegetables from too much sun. Curtis Swift is an extension agent at Colorado State University. He says shading plants from intense sunlight in hot weather can increase production. Tomatoes, peppers, eggplants, and okra and other members of that family drop flower buds and young fruit when the plant temperatures exceed thirty-two degrees Celsius. Plants can get sunburn. Yellow spots may appear on their leaves and fruit. These areas can become thin and white as plant tissue is affected.Curtis Swift says shade can help correct these problems. "What it does is, it actually allows the plant to give off adequate water, which cools the tissue." He suggests shading plants with bed sheets, shade cloth or brush -- in other words, sticks and branches. Cut them about a meter long and stand them in the ground on the south and west sides of plants. "Anything you can put over the plant. A lot of people can cut brush at the edge of the field and stick that into the soil on the south and west side of the plant and provide some shade." Curtis Swift says if you use cloth sheeting, suspend it at least five centimeters above the plants. That way there is enough space for bees to fly around. Be careful not to cover plants too closely, which could trap heat and defeat the purpose of shading. People can also buy canopies to shelter their plants. Some canopies have narrow strips of metal or wood to provide either sunlight or shade, depending on the position of the sun. Curtis Swift says shading works with field crops as well as vine crops like squash. People sometimes plant shrubs or trees to shade their vegetables. But he says tree roots compete with the vegetable roots. The veggies may not get enough nutrients and water. Now, here are a few comments on last week's report about shade growing. Ko from South Korea wrote: I can't imagine plants in the shade for most of day without sunshine! That's a really creative idea. Andy in Chile wrote: This is an interesting article. But you forget that the shadow allows the growth of the fungi. And Slava in Croatia recalled: Once I grew small tomatoes on a balcony under a roof. Sun shone there only in the afternoon. But weather conditions are working against him this night near his home in Maryland. GUS JOHNSON: "Well, Jupiter went behind a cloud so we have the moon ... " Johnson has been watching stars for 50 years. He remembers hundreds of star positions and he loves to share what he knows. GUS JOHNSON: "That planet has a diameter 11 times that of the Earth." In 1979, Johnson discovered a supernova, or exploding star. Scientists now believe his supernova is the newest and nearest black hole. GUS JOHNSON: "That's the supernova right there. When I came to M100 [galaxy], there was this other little star that for some reason caught my attention. I don't know why. And later on, I checked the photograph, and it wasn't on the photograph. And that proved to be the Supernova SN 1979c." Was he happy with the discovery? GUS JOHNSON: "Yes, I was. And I am, and thankful too because so few people actually get to discover things." Scientists believe that black holes are often created. But to see it happen is extremely rare. Kim Weaver is an astrophysicist. Last year, she and other scientists announced that Johnson's supernova was probably the birth of a black hole. KIM WEAVER: "We want to watch how this system evolves and changes in its youthful stages from when it's first born to when it grows into a child and a teenager." Some astronomers dismiss the work of what they call citizen scientists. But Weaver says these amateur astronomers do put thousands more eyes on the universe. KIM WEAVER: "They don't have access to the large telescopes that professionals have access to. But what they can do is they have [the] freedom to be able to use smaller telescopes any time they want to look all over the sky." Caroline Moore and her father are amateur astronomers. CAROLINE MOORE: "This was the first telescope that I had ever got." The Moores made an observatory behind their home in New York State. Caroline made a major discovery two years ago, when she was only 14. She studied hundreds of images with a computer as part of a search team. CAROLINE MOORE: "I discovered the least luminous supernova ever to be observed, which is a ... and I am the youngest person to discover a supernova so it kind of makes it a double interesting thing." Back in Maryland, Gus Johnson observes fresh-fallen snow and an ice-covered lake. There is something almost sad about his intense love of the environment. Was he looking for a supernova that night long ago? GUS JOHNSON: "Nope. It was entirely accidental. It's kind of the grand realities of existence. The earth and everything we know is such a minute part of the whole universe. Watching the creation of God ... that's pretty spectacular."
