Statement of Purpose

I became interested in public health and epidemiology as an undergraduate student and decided to pursue studies in Epidemiology after the completion of my degree. During the course of my Master's degree studies, my interests became more focused on global health due to common characteristics shared by many developing countries, including common types of infectious diseases, the phenomenon of epidemiological transition from infectious diseases to chronic diseases, and potential for health improvement as a tool for social development.  

My Master's degree thesis research was on maternal and child health in a border area community with a large percentage of undocumented migrants in the Thai-Myanmar border area, in which I used inferential and spatial statistics in the analysis. After finishing thesis research in October 2009, I began to work at [xxx] University in southern Thailand, initially as a project coordinator for a [xxx] joint research project on mapping insurgency violence in the deep south of Thailand, then as a research assistant, working mainly on analysis of the data from [xxx] and assisting faculty members and graduate students in writing research articles and grant proposals.  From May 2011 to March 2012, I spent 10 months in Bangladesh on a South-South exchange programme sponsored by [xxx] where I worked with [xxx], a local health NGO in building their research capacity and assisting them with routine monitoring and evaluation work.  During my stay in Bangladesh, I gained experiences in working in a low-resource setting, adapting to a new environment as an expatriate, and learned about how various civil societies in Bangladesh were using cost-effective technologies to help reduce morbidity and mortality, particularly among women and children (e.g. SONO filter for prevention of chronic arsenic poisoning, training traditional birth attendants for safe motherhood, and use of oral electrolyte packages for treatment of childhood diarrhea), all of which further reaffirmed my interest in global health.  After my stay in Bangladesh, I then returned to [xxx] University, where I am currently working with faculty members in writing research and training program proposals.

My purpose in applying for Doctoral Program in Epidemiology at [xxx] is to gain further training and become specialized in global health epidemiology and obtain additional experience in health research which has direct implication for improvement of existing interventions and health programmes, particularly in low and lower-middle income countries. I am interested in the Program and [xxx] due to the availability of a vast array of courses, training, and research opportunities.  

From my thesis research and previous experiences, possible research projects at [xxx] that I am contemplating at present include the study on the effect of simple and cost-effective interventions (such as intensive health promotion for hand-washing or other behavioral changes) affect the incidence of preventable diseases particularly in developing countries, as well as factors affecting the effectiveness and adherence to such behavioral changes.  Other topics also include assessment of existing national health programs and policy on issues related to global health (e.g. screening and treatment of TB and HIV/AIDS, reduction of child malnutrition and morbidity, etc.).  Therefore, to undertake research related to my topics of interest, I intend to seek the mentorship and guidance of Assistant Professor [xxx] due to her experience and interest in preventive approaches to child health in various developing country settings.

Upon the completion of doctoral studies, I intend to join the [xxx] at [xxx] or other similar postdoctoral positions.  My primary career goal is to contribute to international health, particularly in the area of health program and policy, by serving as a technical officer in national or international public health services, although a career in academia is also a possibility.
