Whenever a ma.ting system exists that enables an individual to increase its fitness by obtaining more mates or mates of a higher quality, competition between members of the same sex is inevitable. Mechanisms enabling an individual to compete effectively with other members of the same sex are favoured in such a mating system. Males of S. oryzae are able to mate repeatedly but, as shown in experiment 1, larger males tend to mate sooner and for longer. One possible reason for variable mating success is that females preferentially select large males as mates and male body size varies, hence mating success varies. It is curious that body size in S. oryzae is heritable (Holloway, 1984)., yet correlated with fitness in both females (Richards, 1947) and males (this study). There may be a trade-off with another character (Rose, 1982), for example survival or time to maturity, maintaining genetic variability in body weight (Smith et al., 1987).
