ความคิดเห็นที่ 3 Episode 2 Thank you for all your support na krub. I had almost given up on pursuing my dream from my first attempt at reading Bangkok Post. It seemed so hard. It was already tormenting having to commit to a rote lesson each day at school, I'd have to kill myself if I had to look up every word I found in news articles. Not that the English lessons my school provided was not helpful. It helped with some basic writing and compositions, although not neccesarily the spkoen English. With every effort I made at increasing my conversational skills, the truth is you cant speak any language unless you know enough vocabulary and are aware of its grammar. For that, I began to force myself to read English language magazines and books. It is important though that you pick the books that are written by a native speaker and cater to readers whose first language is English. I will explain to you later why it is important in the following post. I jot down every word I had never seen before in a small note book and would open to read every once in awhile when I got the time. If you must know, I was extremely annoyed, frustrated and discouraged when I did not make significant progress. My speaking was going no where at the time. But, my reading improved tremendously. ความคิดเห็นที่ 6 Episode 3: You can create your surrounding to help you pick up conversational skills Reading became easier for me. I aced almost every English quiz there was in high school. It was the only subject I spent the least amount of time on before the test. It was the benefit of reading voraciously. English grammar has become my second nature. I do still make mistakes, but it is mainly because I m not familiar with the expressions or words. I do depend on the dictionary for my writing. Even native speakers do. After days and nights of intensive reading, I was confident that my speaking would improve the same way my reading had. I was wrong. I would talk to an exchange student in English and be constantly at a loss for words. It was not because I did not know enough English words to hold a conversation beyond simple greetings. It was basically due to the fact I only knew what each word meant, but I did not know which set of words to use to express my thoughts on a certain topic. No one speaks the way they write, except for a politician..LOL..Anyway, with that being said, I moved on to something else. And by something else I meant American TV shows. This was when I became friends with two Luk-krueng girls. They are half American and speak Thai fluently. I discovered after talking to them that they spent their childhood in the U.S. but have been here in Thailand most of their lives. They studied at one international school where the most of the students were and are still Thais. I asked them how they were able to keep their first language while being surrounded by Thai speaking classmates. One of them told me, they watched American shows on cable TV. They said that was ‘where they had learnt conversational English’. One of my observations is that the sisters speak English to each other all the time, which makes me believe that through continuous use of one language anyone can effortlessly pick up ‘the talking language’from their environment. ความคิดเห็นที่ 8 Continued… I followed their footsteps by paying attention to everything I saw on TV. But there was no one around to ask when I heard something I did not understand. Since no one in my family spoke English nor did anyone in my neighborhood do. I felt like it was just another failed attempt. I picked myself up, dust myself off and started over. I was fortunate enough to have access to internet. It was around the time when the term ‘globalization’ was coined and everything and everyone seemed connected. I wasted no time and spent hours on my PC looking for movie scripts online. It was pretty random. Who would have thought anyone would put their movie scripts on the internet? To my surprise, they actually did. Since Hollywood people make a fortune from screening their films and TV shows. They rely on good scripts to attract viewers and to make big bucks. And those who want to get rich and become famous; they need to write a good script. This explains why there are many online sites that offer courses in script writing and the popularity of film schools in the U.S. Back to the story, as I mentioned above, my rigorous search had led to me to the site called www.simplyscripts.com. I have talked about it in the other thread last year. I have to apologize again for not continuing my story as I was kept busy both at work and home. I also promised to post a video of myself speaking in English but never had a chance to film myself yet. It will be up on youtube in the near future. Regarding the website I mention earlier, it contains hundreds of TV show and film scripts. I read a few of them and soon picked up new expressions and slangs even. Why am I suggesting studying English conversations from these scripts? First of all, some of these films were made based on real-life stories. Although some were not, they were more or less the imitation of our lives anyway. Each line mimics our social behaviors. Every word contains cultural references and meanings that reflect how we interact with each other in our society. Before I delve too much into this, let me just say that lessons in your classroom text books or their relatives used at AUA or Wall Street or Boston Bright are confined to certain social situations. They are good for beginners. If you are’ not a beginner. This is the next step. The upsides of studying or borrowing expressions from a movie dialogue would be, first of all, you will sound natural. Many of us, who have just begun to speak English, will struggle for the right words at first. Despite the fact that we have studied the language for many years, our school system never taught us to speak. The movie script is my short cut to creating an impression that I’ve spent years overseas. I was only able to keep this up until I ran out of things to say…HAHAHA..as long as the things you’d like to say happen to be in the movie dialogue..no one would be suspicious..LOL..Second of all, you can read the script many times over until it is embedded in your memory. It would be extremely bizarre to ask a native speaker to repeat the sentence when you don’t understand him. If up to this point your persistence has gotten the best of you, you can certainly expect physical harm to come your way. So no. You should treat them like they are your friends, not a language learning CD. There is probably just one disadvantage of this method though I’d say. These dialogues are not always from real conversations. You can’t expect the other person to respond to your ‘movie-character-speeches’ the same way they do in films. Oftentimes, characters say something meaningful and deep and it seems right in that moment. Unless you have a similar moment, then you are welcomed to quote a character, otherwise; they will just think of you as being weird or totally random. My friend is a living proof. I hope he is not reading this. Anyway, when he speaks English, he sounds offensive and snobbish, even though he is completely the opposite. Language learners,like me, have an empty space in our memory to learn a language. We tend to absorb the personality or even develop an accent from the movie we’ve seen or people we’ve talked to. ความคิดเห็นที่ 17 G’day everyone. How are you all doing? Let’s assume now that you already have a movie script in your hand. Follow my advice and study it. Make it a point of analyzing every single line while you are reading it. I find that, like our Thai language, each expression contains a cultural reference, it is, therefore, important to try to understand what the character is saying first. What you need to do next is to find similar expression in Thai. This method is to familiarize your brain with phrases of both languages that have similar interpretation. Once you have established its Thai meaning, you will most likely recall the same English expression when you are in a movie moment. For example, the script says “I m completely worn out”. The sentence simply means ‘I’m tired’. But we were never taught to say ‘ฉันเหนื่อยสุดๆ’ in English other than ‘I’m really tired’. So when you come across an expression like this, don’t ever let it go unnoticed. Look for a definition and find its meaning in Thai. It would be even more effective if you try to recall any moments in your life that this expression can also be used. In my opinion, when you pick a movie script to read, choose the one that sounds the most like your life. It may sound ridiculous, but you will pick up the language faster than any other genres you are not familiar with. I hope I don’t make it sound too complicated. In my own experiment, I used to dig chick flicks a lot when I was a teenager (one embarrassment now exposed), I would find scripts of TV shows like ‘Dawson’s Creel’ and “Gilmore Girls” exciting to read. Every night before I went to bed, I would borrow their words and use them in my journal. I would describe people I saw or talked to in my daily life using the ‘movie-phrases’ I’d learnt from the script. Whenever I opened my childhood journal to read the stuff I wrote, I could not stop laughing at how messed up my grammar used to be. There was no one around to correct my grammar, so I was trying my best to keep each sentence short and simple. I followed the basic rule of ‘Subject+verb+object’ agreement and steered clear of any complex sentences or anything beyond my ability to write. Grammar is among the key elements in achieving English proficiency. However, from a second language learner’s point of view (more like my view), you should not take it too seriously. All you need to know is basic rules. As long as you don’t write “He are a man” or “She is women”. I m pretty sure, your learning experience will be enjoyable and much more rewarding. In most cases, we write what we say. Our education has taught us to say less and write more. I have heard people saying they can write better than they speak. This is true to a certain extent. You are usually given a certain amount of time to compose your writing while speaking is the opposite. This is usually true when you engage in a conversation. You don’t expect the other person to take 5 minutes off to draft his speech before he gets back to you. We, as a learner, adopt the second language different from native speakers. The same goes to those who try to speak Thai. We don’t learn to speak first and write later. That is, while I was trying to retrace your footsteps with two movie scripts so far, I've found that the scripts only give you a skeleton of the language, because they're very conversational in nature and tend to be short and "to the point." The missing part is the meat -- all other things, grammar, descriptive language, and expressions found everywhere in your writing so far. You r aboslutely correct about how studying conversations is not enough to better your grammar and descriptive language. I’d also like to take this opportunity to explain a few things before I continue with my story. This is not an essay. If I have offended anyone by my poor grammar and incorrect use of words, please be aware that I m not a native speaker. You can expect to see grammatical errors as you read. It’s not = แปะโฆษณาห้องถี่ไปแล้วนะครับ = writing. But I was hoping that what I’ve learnt in the past would inspire anyone who has given up on English to give it another go. Episode 4: My first two entries were not really organized as I was all over the place and have not really arrived at the ‘meat’ yet. In this entry, I will talk about imitation. Before I go further, I m going to mention what ‘input’ is. I found an online article on antimoon.com, which wascreated by two polish web developers, on how they mastered the English language on their own. They encouraged everyone to increase their inputs, which are vocabulary and expressions. They also talked about other ways to achieve fluency on the website. Just follow the link I mentioned above. As far as the speaking is concerned, I found that no matter how many words I could remember, it would always boil down to how I use them to express my thoughts. For some people, words seem to come easily to them to convey their thoughts. I, on the other hand, have always been at a loss for words to express myself. I used to think if my first language was not good enough to get the message across, how was I going to do it English then? I began to improve my communication in Thai as a first step. I m now speaking Thai with clearer pronunciation and have completely stopped mumbling words. I have communicated better in Thai. You may wonder how on earth my talking in Thai has anything todo with English. From an observation on myself, whenever I mumbled, slurred the words or spoke rapidly in Thai, I tended to do the same in English. And if I spoke incoherently in Thai, it would have the same effect on my English. While I was trying to better my speech in Thai, I was also trying to increase the input in English. I transcribed my daily conversations with people in a note book. Most often used ones and began to translate them in English.
