I graduated with Bachelor's of Art in English about 7 years ago. I was jobless for about 5 months before I got a job at a private hospital (in Silom ;D). The job was boring. It's pretty much similar to other type of customer service jobs, only that I had to use some English since the hospital was semi-international. For the most part, I didn't like a job that you need to be there at 7.30 in the morning and get off at 8 in the evening almost everyday, and pays you very little. Did that job improve my English and my point of view? Very little. After 3 months, I had to leave the job due to personal reasons, for about a year.
Then, I got a job at an international insurance company. No English needed. That's when I fell for an insurance company recruitment scam, but oh well. I worked there for 5 months and got a much better offer from a small Korean company. I moved there and worked for a year then moved to the U.S.
To be honest, those jobs in Thailand didn't do me anything compared to now. I believe I'm lucky than many others here that I have somewhat better English background. Not just that, I agree that loads of English literature that had haunted us during our college years are actually beneficial. I might not be better than my other peers, but my strong base got me to this point that I can do anything I want. I might not be very good at thinking as I read, but I can adapt whatever I learned to whatever I do. Who would believe that a science dumb like me would make it to an English-based nursing school?
