- เมื่ออยู่เมืองนอก ข้าพเจ้าเป็นนักหนังสือพิมพ์ หาเงินได้มาก และใช้จ่ายอย่างฟุ่มเฟือย อยู่ในความแวดล้อมอันสนุกสบาย เคยต่อความหรูหราต่าง ๆ มาเป็นเวลากว่าหกปี เมื่อความจำเป็นมาปรากฏขึ้นว่า จะต้องลาจากสมาคมนี้กลับมาเมืองไทย ท่านคงจะเข้าใจว่าข้าพเจ้าคงจะรู้สึกเสียใจอย่างสุดซึ้ง และเสียดายที่ต้องจากสิ่งต่าง ๆ ที่เคยผ่านพบมาแล้ว แต่ความจริงหาได้เป็นเช่นนั้นทีเดียวไม่ จริงอยู่ ข้าพเจ้ารู้สึกเสียใจและเสียดายที่ต้องจากเพื่อนฝูงที่รักใคร่ แต่ชีวิตหนังสือพิมพ์ได้สอนให้ข้าพเจ้าเป็นผู้ปลงตก เห็นความจำเป็นสอนให้เป็นผู้ที่อดทน เตรียมพร้อมที่จะต่อสู้กับความเปลี่ยนแปลงอันจะเกิดขึ้นแก่ตนในเมื่อมาถึงประเทศสยาม แทนที่จะเป็นผู้มีโชคจมอยู่ในกองเงินกองทองที่ตนหามาได้เอง ข้าพเจ้าจะต้องมาเป็นคนจน ตั้งหน้าทำงานเพื่อจะหารายได้มาชดเชยให้ชีวิตดำรงอยู่ พยายามหาเงินมาให้พอที่จะมีความได้เหมือนที่เมืองนอกถ้าสามารถจะทำได้ ข้าพเจ้าเคยกระทำสงครามเช่นนี้สำเร็จมาแล้วครั้งหนึ่ง และทำได้ที่เมืองฝรั่ง มาคราวนี้จะต้องทำสงครามเช่นนี้อีก และทำในเมืองไทยอันเป็นบ้านเมืองของข้าพเจ้า ดังนั้นจึงเชื่อว่าคงจะบรรลุความสำเร็จได้ง่ายกว่า ข้าพเจ้าไม่ใช่เป็นคนขลาดในเรื่องนี้
When I lived abroad, I was a journalist who earned a lot of money and spent them extravagantly. I lived in pleasant environment and got used to the luxury over six years. But when it appeared that I had to leave that society and came back to Thailand, you must think that I was extremely sad and regret being away from what I had experienced. But that idea was not really true. Even though I felt sad and regret that I had to leave my dear friends, journalism had taught me to be disillusioned. Many necessities made me tolerant and ready to cope with any changes that would happen to me when I arrive Siam. Instead of being lucky and living a life of luxury, I became the poor. I worked hard to get money in order to maintain my life. I tried to get money that would be enough to make me as happy as living abroad if possible. I used to win such war in foreign countries. For this time, I had to be in such war again and in Thailand which was my homeland. I, therefore, believed that it might be easier for me to win. I was not a coward for that matter.
-มีเพื่อนหลายคนเคยบอกข้าพเจ้าว่า ชีวิตเป็นของไม่น่าอยู่ แต่ข้าพเจ้าไม่เคยแน่ใจเลยว่านี่เป็นความคิดที่ถูก จริงอยู่ ชีวิตของเราตามธรรมดามีความขมขื่นระทมทุกข์อยู่มาก แต่ก็ย่อมมีความสมหวัง ความสุข เป็นรางวัลหรือสินน้ำใจบ้างบางคราวเป็นแน่ โชคเป็นของแปลก ไม่มีใครสามารถจะทราบหรือเดาได้ล่วงหน้าจนกระทั่งยาจกวณิพกยังไม่อยากตาย ทั้งนี้เพราะอะไร ชีวิตเป็นสิ่งที่ไม่น่าอยู่จริงหรือ?
Many of my friends told me that life was unlovely. But I was never sure that it was a true idea. Although our lives were commonly suffering, sometimes we certainly got the achievement and happiness as the reward. Luck was strange. Nobody could know or predict beforehand. Even the beggars did not want to die. Why? Was life really unlovely?

เรามีความลับประจำชีวิตอยู่ด้วยกันทุกคน และเราผู้เดียวจะต้องเป็นผู้ทราบความลับนี้ เพื่อความจำเป็นที่จะต้องอยู่ในโลกต่อไป สำหรับตนเอง ข้าพเจ้าเชื่อว่าวิชาหนังสือพิมพ์ได้เผยความลับแห่งชีวิตให้ข้าพเจ้าทราบอยู่แล้วโดยตระหนัก มองไปที่กระจกครั้งใดก็เห็นเงาภาพอันแท้จริงปรากฏอยู่เสมอ กระจกเงาที่ดีแล้วย้อมไม่หลอก ข้าพเจ้ารู้จักรักและภูมิใจในประเทศสยาม ชาติไทย และผิวอันเหลืองของเรา ก็เพราะข้าพเจ้ามีส่วนเป็นเจ้าของอยู่ด้วย ข้าพเจ้ารู้สึกมั่นใจทีเดียวว่า ข้าพเจ้าจะทำประโยชน์ให้แก่ประเทศสยามได้มากกว่าประเทศอื่นหลายพันเท่านัก ทั้งนี้ก็เพราะข้าพเจ้าเป็นคนไทยและจะเป็นคนชาติอื่นไม่ได้เป็นอันขาด ยิ่งกว่านั้น ถ้าจะไปเป็นพวกนักหนังสือพิมพ์ที่เมืองนอกอีก ข้าพเจ้ารู้ดีว่าตนไม่ใช่เป็นคนแข็งแรงพอที่จะทนต่อสู้กับชีวิตอันโยกย้ายตรากตรำไม่หยุดหย่อนนั้นไปได้นาน
We all had personal secret. And only we must know our own secrets in order to keep living in this world. For me, I believed that journalism had revealed the secret of life to me. Whenever I looked at the mirror, the reality was always reflected. Good mirror did not deceive(lie). I loved and was proud of Siam, Thai nation and our yellow skin because I owned it. I was sure that I could make the benefits for Siam much more than other countries for over thousands fold because I was Thai and could never be another at all. Moreover, I knew that to be a journalist abroad again, I would not be healthy enough to move from place to place for a long time.
-ประเทศสยามอย่างน้อยก็เป็นที่ที่เงียบสงบ เป็นที่สงบใจ หาความสุขสบายได้ในทางที่ไม่มีการ เต้นแร้งเต้นกา มากนัก นี่แหละท่าน คือเหตุผลทั้งมวลที่ข้าพเจ้าไม่คิดจะกลับไปเป็นนักหนังสือพิมพ์ที่เมืองนอกอีก
At least, Siam was a peaceful place where I could find happiness without putting a hard effort. Sir, this was the reason why I did not want to be a journalist abroad again.
-แต่ก่อนอื่นท่านควรจะทราบไว้ก่อนว่า สิ่งที่ได้กล่าวมาแล้วทั้งสิ้น ไม่ใช่ข้อปรารภของข้าพเจ้าเองโดยลำพัง แต่เป็นข้อปรารภของชาวต่างประเทศ
But first of all you should learn that all I mentioned were not my saying alone but it was the concern among the foreigners.
-ผู้ใดที่คิดว่าบ้านเมืองเราภายในจะเป็นอย่างไร ก็ไม่มีชาวต่างประเทษที่ไหนรู้จริงนั้นเป็นคนที่คิดผิด ข้าพเจ้าเชื่อว่าพวกสโมสรหนังสือพิมพ์ในกรุงลอนดอน ปารีส นิวยอร์ก เบอร์ลิน ฯลฯ รู้เรื่องเมืองไทยดีกว่าพวกเราเป็นจำนวนมากนัก ถ้าท่านได้มีฐานะอย่างข้าพเจ้าในสมัยที่อยู่ในสมาคมหนังสือพิมพ์ และได้ยินได้ฟังเรื่องราวต่าง ๆ ที่เขาพูดกันถึงเรื่องเมืองไทย ท่านจะต้องตกใจไม่น้อยทีเดียว
Who thought that any foreigners did not know what inside our country was like was wrong. I believed that the journalists in London, Paris, New York, Berlin, etc. knew much more about Thailand than we. If you had been like me as I was in the press club and had heard how they talked about Thailand, you would have been very startled.
-พูดมาถึงเพียงนี้ ข้าพเจ้าอดนึกถึงชีวิตเมื่อครั้งยังเป็นนักหนังสือพิมพ์อยู่เมืองนอกไม่ได้ สมัยนั้นข้าพเจ้าเป็นสุขอย่างที่สุด ไม่เคยรู้สึกว่าในโลกนี้จะมีสวรรค์แห่งความสุขชั้นอื่นเทียม ไม่เคยนึกถึงวันที่ได้ผ่านพ้นไปแล้วและวันที่จะมาในภายหน้า ข้าพเจ้าอยู่สำหรับวันหนึ่ง ๆ
As long as I said, I could not refrain from thinking of my life when I was a journalist abroad. At that time I was extremely happy and never thought that there would be another heaven of happiness on this earth. I never thought of the days that had passed and the days that would come. I lived for day by day
-อาร์โนลด์เป็นผู้ที่ถูกมอบหมายให้เป็นผู้นำข้าพเจ้าเข้าอยู่ในสมาคมหนังสือพิมพ์ เนื่องจากอาชีพซึ่งเราดำเนินร่วมกัน เราเกิดชอบพอรักใคร่เป็นมิตรกันจนถึงกับจากกันไม่ได้ สำหรับอาร์โนลด์ ข้าพเจ้าไม่เคยรู้สึกว่าเป็นคนผิวขาวและตนเองเป็นคนผิวเหลือง เราช่างอยู่ในโลกเดียวกันได้อย่างสนิทสนมเสียนี่กระไร
Arnold was appointed to bring me into the press club. Because of the career we worked, we liked each other as fellow so much that we could not leave. For Arnold, I had ever felt that he was white and I was yellow. How intimately we lived in the same world!
-หล่อนเคยพูดกับข้าพเจ้าครั้งหนึ่งว่า เมื่อรู้จักสนิมสนมจริง ๆ แล้ว ผิวเหลืองและผิวขาวจะผสมกันไม่ได้เป็นอันขาด
Once she said to me that after knowing each other well, yellow and white could not mix.
-เลดีมอยรา ดันน์ และมาเรีย เกรย์ผิดกันก็เพราะว่าเนื่องจากที่เห็นแก่ข้าพเจ้า เลดีมอยรารู้สึกว่าข้าพเจ้าเป็นคนฉลาดและเก่งพอที่จะมีส่วนได้เสียในความเจริญและความผาสุกของเมืองไทย ที่จะมีมาในอนาคตได้ผู้หนึ่ง
Lady Moira Dunn and Maria Grey were different according to how they thought of me. Lady Moira felt that I was smart enough to be the one who will partake in gain and loss of Thailand prosperity and well-being in the future.
-มาเรียรู้ดีว่าพวกเราคนไทย เป็นคนผิวเหลืองและผิวดำ ชีวิตของพวกเราอยู่ในฐานะที่ต่ำต้อยใกล้ความเป็นป่าเถื่อนมากกว่าชาวยุโรป แต่แทนที่จะรู้สึกสมน้ำหน้า มาเรียกลับรู้สึกสงสาร หล่อนเข้าใจว่าการที่เมืองไทยไม่เจริญเหมือนเมืองนอก ก็คงจะเป็นเพราะธรรมชาติไม่อำนวยดอกกระมัง อากาศร้อนจัด ท้องที่ชื้นแฉะเป็นโคลนเป็นเลน ฯลฯ ข้าพเจ้าคนเดียวจะไปทำอะไรได้
Maria learned that we, Thai, was yellow and black. Our lives were in low status near savageness more than the Europeans. Instead of looking down, Maria felt pity. She thought that Thai politics was not in progress like many foreign countries because the environment did not support. The weather was very hot. The land was wet and muddy, etc. What could I alone do?
