There's real "siu sha" that's natural. Like Hong 7 Gung, for example. He's a glutton and he made no bones about it. One time he messed up some important mission because of his gluttony and so he chopped off one of his fingers. But he made it clear that it was punishment over the messing up of the mission rather than giving up his love for food! Then at Hwa Shan, he told Kau Chin Yan that in his life, he had killed a lot of people but none of them were innocent - they were all genuinely evil folks. It was his level of genuineness and nobility (and genuine "siu sha", I should say) that moved Kau Chin Yan to tears and repentance (note that Hong 7 Gung only had to say a few words - he still hadn't regained his internal energy fully at that point). Hong 7 Gung is likable because he is genuine - Wong Yuk See is inferior to him because his "siu sha" is all a deliberate exercise/effort - play-acting, that is!
A genuinely "siu sha" person wouldn't have been so attached to a lot of earthly things. From the novel, we can tell that WYS was terribly obsessed with 9 Yum Jun Ging. That was why he was so angry when his disciples stole it (conveniently ignoring the fact that he too stole it from Chow Bak Tung using deception!). In fact, it was because his pregnant wife knew his obsession that she had to rewrite the whole manual from memory and thus went into labour prematurely and died. And it was this obsession that drove him to imprison Chow Bak Tung and used seductive music to play on Chow Bak Tung's fleshly desires every night! How much lower can a man get?
In addition to that, a genuinely "siu sha" person wouldn't be so attached to earthly riches - as in gold, silver and precious stones. WYS loved jewellery and pearls. He had a whole collection of precious treasure - probably taken over from the bandits he enslaved (which opens his motives to question - whether it was out of chivalry that he captured them or it was out of greed! One who steals from bandits is a bigger bandit!). Kuk Ling Fung, his disciple, amassed a large collection of precious jewels hoping to present them to his master, Wong Yuk See hoping to buy his pardon - Kuk Ling Fung knew how much WYS loved this stuff! And finally, WYS wanted to not just be buried at sea with his wife's corpse - he wanted to take his treasures along!
3) He lacks the respectability of a martial-artist - Au Yeung Fung is evil but he has that level of respectability as a martial artist. When he was stranded at sea with Gwok Jing, he could have killed him. They were both holding on to one piece of wood. Why did he keep him alive? Was it that he needed Gwok Jing's assistance at sea? Now, we know that Gwok Jing grew up in Mongolia and that he's pretty hopeless in the water (Wong Yung had to teach him to swim!). So he probably wasn't much of an assistance to Au Yeung Fung at all. I think the main reason why AYF didn't kill Gwok Jing was because he had self-respect. However venomous he was as the West Venom, he was also an accomplished martial artist. It's way below him to attack a defenceless junior generation dude at sea! But we see on many occasions, Wong Yuk See actually had no qualms about beating up Gwok Jing. Like when he was testing Gwok Jing's musical abilities (?!?), he used his flute skill (using his full internal energy) against Gwok Jing's gong-beatings. He could have killed Gwok Jing. It's way below the level of an accomplished martial artist to do that! Moreover, considering his intelligence, Wong Yuk See should have known that Au Yeung Hak wouldn't have been a good husband for Wong Yung. Why then did he agree to the 3-round competition between Au Yeung Hak and Gwok Jing? Of course, it was a good thing that Au Yeung Hak lost the competition. But what if he had won? Wouldn't Wong Yung have to marry Au Yeung Hak then? Couldn't Wong Yuk See just turn down Au Yeung Fung's proposal in the first place instead of coming up with that stupid competition? He had the right to do so since he is Wong Yung's father after all.
And speaking of the competition, what kind of nonsensical competition was that? Even Hong 7 Gung was getting impatient - "We are all martial artists here - if we do not compete using our martial arts what do we compete with? Eating skills? Or toilet skills?" Here again we see how much more genuine and "siu sha" Hong 7 Gung is compared to Wong Yuk See. Wong Yuk See was trying to be deliberately *clever* in his choice of competition methods!
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
From the above, we see that Wong Yuk See was really a very unlikable, arrogant, cruel dude who probably deserved the contempt that the pugilistic world had shown towards him. But like all Jin Yong characters, he is also presented as a "round character"; a properly developed human being with many aspects to his character. It cannot be denied that Wong Yuk See was a man who possess a high level of intelligence, independent thinking and creativity.
Wong Yung mentioned that she can recall on many occasions her father reading from the classics (Confucius, Mencius, Chuang-Tzu, etc.) Wong Yuk See would read a certain passage and nod his head in agreement - sometimes even giving his comments about the nobility and far-reaching precepts in that passage. At other times, WYS would fling the book across the room in anger - "Utter nonsense! What kind of reasoning is this?", he would shout in disagreement. This shows that Wong Yuk See was genuinely intelligent and wise.
Therefore, we see the change that came with time for Wong Yuk See. He matured over time and became genuinely likable towards the end of LOCH and in ROCH. We no longer see his deliberate play-acting anymore. He became genuinely "siu sha" - like in his dealings with Yeung Gor, for example. We no longer see his cruelty (he even spared Li Mok Sau!). Instead we see his compassion for Sor Gu, Cheng Ying, etc. And in the final scene of ROCH, we finally see Wong Yuk See's "finest moment" - as a strategist for the Sung army against the invading Mongolian army. That was the moment that he was born for. That was his moment of glory. That was when he finally became a hero and not merely a *deliberate heretic*.
Sorry, I got a little over-excited over this posting and wrote an even longer piece of rubbish than Sheraldine (haha!). Hope you all understand what I was getting at...
